The rules at Northern Kentucky
| Question | What is published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| School NIL policy | Not published. NKU Athletics' compliance page (read 2026-10-24) links the NCAA 2025-26 Division I Manual and three documents posted 2022-02-08 for boosters and local businesses but no student-athlete NIL policy, and NKU's university A to Z policy listing has no NIL policy. The one NIL document posted, "Boosters Name, Image and Likeness Rules Education" (2022), answers "What is the Rule?" by saying the NCAA told schools to follow state laws and rules and that "Governor Beshear signed an Executive Order" allowing NIL pay | NKU Athletics, Compliance page and Boosters NIL one-sheet (2022); NKU Policy Administration, A to Z listing |
| How deals are disclosed | NIL Go for third-party deals of $600 or more within five business days (NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2). NKU's 2022 booster one-sheet says "NKU student-athletes are required to disclose any proposed NIL agreement to the compliance office 7 days prior to the activity happening". Kentucky law has an athlete submit a potential third-party agreement to the school's designated official, who has up to three business days to flag conflicts (KRS 164.6947(2)). | Banned categories | Kentucky law bars third-party NIL deals for sports betting, controlled substances, substances the athlete's association bans, adult entertainment, and products or services illegal for the athlete (KRS 164.6945(4)). NKU's 2022 booster one-sheet lists sectors barred "based on NKU policy": lotteries, casinos, sports wagering facilities and online equivalents; products marketed exclusively to those 18 or older; adult entertainment; tobacco, marijuana and nicotine vapor products; apparel, sportswear, footwear and athleisurewear during all team activities; other colleges and universities, health care and related services; and promotions that conflict with an existing university contract | /nil/college/kentucky; NKU Boosters NIL one-sheet (2022) |
| School marks and group licensing | Not published for NIL. NKU Athletics posts a 2021 brand identity style guide, but no page on athletes' use of NKU marks in NIL deals or on group licensing | NKU Athletics, Brand Identity Standards (2021) |
| Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission puts the 2026-27 cap at approximately $21.58 million per school and lists NKU as participating in 2026-27. NKU's Board of Regents approved participation for 2025-26 on 2025-01-15 (the recommendation says "the decision to participate does not require an increase in funding from the institution") and for 2026-27 on 2025-11-19. NKU has published no allocation by sport or athlete | NKU Board of Regents materials and minutes (2025-01-15, 2025-11-19); College Sports Commission |
| Collective or NIL group | Not published. No NKU page names a collective or an NKU-run NIL marketplace. The athletics staff directory lists a men's basketball staff member as "Director of Men's Basketball Operations/NIL Coordinator" | NKU Athletics, Staff Directory (read 2026-10-24) |
| Agents and representation | NKU's agents page links NCAA agent rules material and an Agent Registration Form (posted 2019-07-19) for "Northern Kentucky University's Player-Agent Program", which says "All agents applying for registration to communicate with NKU student-athletes must be registered with the State of Kentucky". Kentucky law counts an agreement to negotiate NIL deals as an agency contract: agents register with the Department of Professional Licensing, agent and athlete notify the athletic director within 72 hours or before the next athletic event, and the athlete may cancel within 14 days | NKU Athletics, Compliance Agents page and Agent Registration Form; /nil/college/kentucky |

What is specific to Northern Kentucky
NKU's clearest NIL documents are its Board of Regents records, not an athletics policy. At a special meeting by video teleconference on 2025-01-15, the regents passed, without opposition, a resolution that "approves Northern Kentucky University's election to participate in the new Division I structure for the 2025-26 academic year". The recommendation said that "NKU will have much more flexibility in packaging student-athlete scholarships and benefits, which may include NIL payments", that roster caps were generally higher than NKU's roster sizes, and that "If NKU wishes to maintain competitive Division I programs, particularly in men's and women's basketball, it must compete for and retain top-talent recruits." On 2025-11-19, as part of the consent agenda, "The Board of Regents approved Northern Kentucky University's election to participate in the NCAA Division I revenue-sharing structure for the 2026-27 academic year", according to the minutes; the recommendation's background says "Our initial assessment is that the men's and women's basketball teams would not have been able to compete in retaining and recruiting talent without a commitment to revenue-sharing for the current season." Between those votes, the board's 2025-07-22 retreat minutes record an athletics update on NIL with the men's and women's basketball head coaches.
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
Questions about NIL at Northern Kentucky
Does Northern Kentucky pay its athletes?
NKU takes part in revenue sharing. Its Board of Regents approved participation for 2025-26 on 2025-01-15 and for 2026-27 on 2025-11-19, and the College Sports Commission lists NKU for 2026-27, with a cap of approximately $21.58 million per school. NKU has not published how much it shares or how the money is divided; its regents' records single out men's and women's basketball as the programs where revenue sharing mattered for recruiting and retention.
Why did NKU's Board of Regents vote on NIL?
Under the House settlement, schools outside the Power Four choose each year whether to join revenue sharing, and NKU's board makes that choice by resolution. The 2025-01-15 resolution cited the competitiveness of NKU's Division I programs and the Athletics enrollment strategy the board set in November 2023. The 2025-11-19 recommendation said continuing "also will ensure consistency in operations", since not opting in would mean reverting to pre-House settlement rules.
How do NKU athletes report NIL deals?
Third-party deals of $600 or more are reported to NIL Go within five business days (NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2 and 22.2.2.2). NKU's only posted NIL guidance, a 2022 booster one-sheet, says athletes disclose proposed NIL agreements to the compliance office 7 days before the activity. Kentucky law has the athlete submit a potential third-party agreement to the school, which has up to three business days to flag conflicts.
What NIL deals are off limits for Northern Kentucky athletes?
Kentucky law bars deals tied to sports betting, controlled substances, substances the athlete's association bans, adult entertainment, and products or services illegal for the athlete. NKU's 2022 booster one-sheet adds lotteries and casinos, products marketed exclusively to those 18 or older, tobacco, marijuana and vapes, apparel and footwear during team activities, and other colleges, health care and related services.
Does an NIL agent need to register to work with an NKU athlete?
Under Kentucky law an agreement to negotiate NIL deals is an agency contract, so the agent registers with the Department of Professional Licensing, and the agent and athlete notify the athletic director within 72 hours. NKU's compliance site also posts a registration form for its own Player-Agent Program.
