UMass NIL rules.

UMass took over the Massachusetts Collective's NIL work in July 2026, routes support through its Script U Scholarship Society, and asks for NIL Go reports before payment.

The short answer. On 2026-07-17 UMass Athletics announced it "will assume operational responsibilities for Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) initiatives previously managed by the Massachusetts Collective", which "will cease operations", with its funds now administered through the Script U Scholarship Society. The College Sports Commission lists UMass as a participating school for 2026-27. UMass's NIL page says Division I athletes report third-party deals of $600 or more in NIL Go and asks that they be disclosed "prior to receiving any payment"; Massachusetts has no college NIL statute (/nil/college/massachusetts).

School NIL policyUMass posts two documents. The current "Massachusetts NIL" page (undated) lists what athletes may and may not do, the NIL Go reporting rule, barred categories, trademark rules and sanctions, and says the university "reserves the right to adjust these policies at any time". The older "University of Massachusetts NIL Policies" page, marked "Effective May 26, 2022" and still posted, says athletes "may receive compensation from third parties (but NOT from the University)", requires disclosure within seven days, and bars the university from recommending a particular professional service providerUMass Athletics, Massachusetts NIL page; UMass NIL Policies (effective 2022-05-26)
How deals are disclosedNIL Go for third-party deals of $600 or more within five business days (NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2). UMass's NIL page says "All D1 student-athletes must report third-party (an individual or entity other than UMass) NIL deals with compensation that equals or exceeds $600 (total)" in NIL Go, that failure "may lead to penalties, including the loss of NCAA eligibility", and that athletes "are asked to disclose all third-party NIL deals with a value of $600 or more for approval into" NIL Go "prior to receiving any payment". The 2022 policy page instead says compensated NIL activity is disclosed "within seven days of receipt of the compensation" and agreements "within 7 days of execution"UMass Athletics, Massachusetts NIL page; UMass NIL Policies (2022); NCAA 2026-27 Division I Manual
Banned categoriesUMass's NIL page says "UMass NIL policy prohibits" NIL activity involving sex or adult entertainment, alcohol brands or liquor stores, tobacco products or e-cigarettes, CBD products or marijuana dispensaries, sports wagering or gambling, firearms (including manufacturers, shooting ranges and accessories), NCAA banned substances, and activities "causing disruption or reflect unfavorably on the team, athletics department, or the University". The same page also lists, under "NCAA rules DO NOT permit", endorsements of alcohol, tobacco and nicotine devices, anabolic steroids, sports betting, gambling, firearms athletes "cannot legally purchase" and sexually oriented businesses, and any NIL contract "that extends beyond collegiate participation". No Massachusetts statute lists banned categoriesUMass Athletics, Massachusetts NIL page; /nil/college/massachusetts
School marks and group licensingAthletes may say they play a sport "at UMass" but may not use the university's name, marks or logos, including apparel with them, "without prior written permission from University of Massachusetts Trademark and Licensing Administration", which has a Trademark Use Form; merchandise with UMass marks must be made by university licensees. Generic athletics department photos may be used on written request at "$25.00" per image, and "No current or former student-athlete photos will be provided or used".UMass Athletics, Massachusetts NIL page
Revenue sharingThe College Sports Commission puts the 2026-27 cap at approximately $21.58 million per school and lists UMass as a participating school for 2026-27. The Minutemen Club's Script U page, which prints no date but describes Script U as "Now in its second year" (read 2026-10-23), says the environment "now includes revenue sharing and opportunities to provide additional benefits" and that "This past year, we increased our scholarship and additional financial benefits budget by more than $7 million". That is a department-wide budget figure as the page prints it, not a revenue-sharing total. Athletics Director Ryan Bamford said on 2026-07-17 that the Script U rollout allows UMass "to resource our coaches and student-athletes to win championships in this new era". Collective or NIL groupUMass names no current collective on its own pages as of 2026-10-23. UMass endorsed three collectives in 2023 (the Massachusetts Collective and GoMassNIL on 2023-01-18, the Midnight Ride Collective for football on 2023-05-01). On 2026-07-17 UMass said the Massachusetts Collective "will cease operations" and that "All funds previously managed by The Massachusetts Collective will now be administered through the Script U Scholarship Society". The 2022 policy page still lists all three as endorsed, and UMass has published nothing on the status of GoMassNIL or the Midnight Ride Collective since. The Massachusetts Collective's own site was still up on 2026-10-23 and did not mention the changeUMass Athletics releases (2023-01-18, 2023-05-01, 2023-10-26, 2026-07-17); UMass NIL Policies (2022)
Agents and representationUMass's NIL page says athletes "may secure representation (agent, lawyer, financial advisor), ONLY for NIL and NOT for future professional athletic contract purposes", with "a written agreement with the agent specific to NIL activities". The compliance office's agent page posts an Agent Policy and an Agent Registration Packet (2023). State lawNo statute. No Massachusetts college NIL or athlete-agent statute was found; H.1930, the latest NIL bill, went to a study order on 2026-03-26, so school policy, NCAA rules and the general right-of-publicity law (G.L. c. 214, § 3A) apply/nil/college/massachusetts

What is specific to UMass

UMass moved from endorsing outside collectives to running NIL support inside the athletics department. In 2023 it endorsed three independent collectives: the Massachusetts Collective for men's and women's basketball, GoMassNIL for all sports, and the Midnight Ride Collective for football, and in October 2023 the athletics department and LEARFIELD's UMass Sports Properties named the Massachusetts Collective the official NIL partner of both basketball programs. On 2026-07-17 UMass announced that athletics would take over the Massachusetts Collective's NIL initiatives, saying the change simplifies "the administration of NIL agreements relative to approvals from the College Sports Commission", and that collective members' support since 2026-01-01 would count toward Script U Scholarship Society membership. The Script U Society, launched with the Minutemen Club in March 2025, is a tax-deductible fund for "student-athlete scholarships and additional benefits".

How Leave fits

In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
