| School NIL policy | "University of Nebraska Athletics, Name, Image, & Likeness Policy", linked from huskers.com/nil (history: adopted 2021-10-01; revised 2023-01-23, 2023-06-24, 2024-07-11, 2025-07-01). It allows NIL pay but not pay "for athletics participation or performance", bars promoting or being paid for non-institutional NIL during team activities (practice, competition, media, academic requirements, recruiting, fundraising and community service events, team building, team travel) without express written permission, and says it "adheres to the Nebraska Student-athlete Name, Image, or Likeness Rights Act". Changes are communicated through the "University of Nebraska Athletics Revenue Share and NIL Office" | Nebraska Athletics, NIL Policy (revised 2025-07-01) |
| How deals are disclosed | The policy says "NIL Deals worth $600 or more (e.g. cash, housing, vehicle, gym membership, discounts) must be reported at NILGo.com within 5 business days of agreeing to the deal" and that failure to report "may lead to penalties, including loss of eligibility", matching NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2 and 22.2.2.2. Nebraska law separately has an athlete disclose each NIL contract to the official the school designates (§ 48-3604(1)), with no deadline set | Nebraska Athletics, NIL Policy; NCAA Division I Manual 2026-27; Neb. Rev. Stat. § 48-3604 |
| Banned categories | The policy bars NIL activities or agreements that extend beyond the athlete's participation at the University, that involve selling awards or items received for athletics participation, or that involve "Gambling/sports wagering vendors; CBD, beer/wine/spirits/alcohol, tobacco; Illegal substances or activities; Adult entertainment; and Any vendors associated with athletic performance enhancing drugs", or any business that conflicts with the University's values. Nebraska law lets a school bar categories it reasonably deems inconsistent with its educational mission (§ 48-3603(8)) | Nebraska Athletics, NIL Policy; Neb. Rev. Stat. § 48-3603 |
| School marks and group licensing | The policy bars using University intellectual property (marks, logos, facilities, apparel, gear, uniforms, and photos, video or highlights with University marks) without express written permission. Its listed exceptions include marks used by existing University partners holding "use of marks" privileges, group licensing partners, social media avatars when no unaffiliated third party is featured, competition photos for individual autograph signings, and apparel from a University licensee pre-approved by Licensing. Staff may promote athletes' NIL activity if pre-approved, citing Board of Regents Policy RP-3.3.9 | Nebraska Athletics, NIL Policy; NIL Trademarks, Licensing and Branding page |
| Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission puts the 2026-27 cap at approximately $21.58 million per school and lists Nebraska as a participating school. Nebraska Athletics wrote on 2026-02-04 that for schools "participating in the settlement, including Nebraska", NCAA scholarship limits were removed and roster limits set, and announced 78 new scholarships for 2026-27. In a 2025-10-23 public-records ruling, the Attorney General found the University could withhold its revenue-sharing payment records for July to September 2025 as trade secrets, noting the University's position that the payments are for a license to use athletes' NIL and that athletes are not employees | Nebraska Athletics release (2026-02-04); Nebraska Attorney General ruling (2025-10-23); College Sports Commission |
| Collective or NIL group | 1890 Nebraska. Nebraska Athletics named it the "official Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) Collective of Nebraska Athletics" on 2024-07-08; contributions earn Huskers Athletic Fund priority points and count toward membership levels, and gifts directed to the 1890 Foundation may be tax deductible when priority points are declined. The release quotes Athletic Director Troy Dannen. Nebraska's NIL page also links the Opendorse Marketplace, and its NIL intake form lets athletes list brands they are interested in | Nebraska Athletics release (2024-07-08); NIL page; NIL Intake Form |
| Agents and representation | The policy lets athletes secure representation for NIL "but not for current or future professional athletic contract negotiations" and says representatives "must be licensed as required by the State of Nebraska". Nebraska Athletics' Information for Agents page says sports agents and financial advisors who wish to contact an athlete must first complete the Nebraska Athletics Agent Registration Form. State law: agents who solicit endorsement contracts register with the Secretary of State (§ 48-2604), and schools may not penalize an athlete for hiring professional representation (§ 48-3606) | Nebraska Athletics, NIL Policy and Information for Agents; Neb. Rev. Stat. §§ 48-2604, 48-3606 |
| Compliance contact | Nebraska Athletics Compliance, ath-compliance@nebraska.edu; Patricia Peterson, Senior Associate AD, Compliance, (402) 472-4617. The NIL policy names Jonathan Bateman, Associate AD, Administration, for NIL questions | Nebraska Athletics, Compliance Staff; NIL Policy |
| State law | In force. The Nebraska Student-Athlete Name, Image, or Likeness Rights Act (§§ 48-3601 to 48-3609) lets schools pay athletes for NIL when association and school policy, a court order or a settlement allows it, and requires athletes to disclose NIL contracts to the school | /nil/college/nebraska |
What is specific to Nebraska
Nebraska's revenue sharing has been tested in public-records law. A requester asked the University of Nebraska System for the total and number of its direct payments to athletes under the House settlement from 2025-07-01 to 2025-09-30; the University said its spreadsheets of payment transactions showed how it allocates the cap and were trade secrets, and on 2025-10-23 Attorney General Mike Hilgers agreed and found no violation of the Public Records Act. Nebraska's statute separately says a school may not disclose the terms of an athlete's NIL contract, except that a contract entered into by a public body is a public record (§ 48-3604). Inside the department, the NIL policy is maintained by a "Revenue Share and NIL Office", cites Board of Regents Policy RP-3.3.9 for staff promotion of athletes' deals, and puts NIL Go reporting in its own text. Outside it, 1890 Nebraska has been the department's official collective since 2024-07-08, with donations folded into the Huskers Athletic Fund priority system.
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
Questions about NIL at Nebraska
Does Nebraska pay its athletes?
Yes, through House settlement revenue sharing. Nebraska Athletics wrote on 2026-02-04 that it participates in the settlement, the College Sports Commission lists Nebraska for 2026-27 (cap approximately $21.58 million per school), and a 2025-10-23 Attorney General ruling describes the University's revenue-sharing payments to athletes from July 2025. Nebraska law allows school NIL pay when a settlement permits it (§ 48-3603(7)(b)). Nebraska publishes no per-athlete amounts.
Are Nebraska's athlete payments public records?
Not the payment records the University was asked for. On 2025-10-23 the Attorney General found the University of Nebraska could withhold its July to September 2025 revenue-sharing payment records as trade secrets. Nebraska's NIL statute bars schools from disclosing NIL contract terms but says a contract signed by a public body is a public record (§ 48-3604(2)); the ruling did not discuss that section.
What NIL collective works with Nebraska?
1890 Nebraska, named the official NIL collective of Nebraska Athletics on 2024-07-08. Contributions earn Huskers Athletic Fund priority points, and gifts to the 1890 Foundation may be tax deductible when priority points are declined.
How do Nebraska athletes report NIL deals?
Nebraska's NIL policy says deals worth $600 or more, including non-cash items such as housing, a vehicle or discounts, must be reported at NILGo.com within 5 business days of agreeing to the deal. State law also has athletes disclose NIL contracts to the official the school designates (§ 48-3604(1)).
What NIL deals are banned at Nebraska?
Nebraska's policy bars deals with gambling or sports wagering vendors, CBD, alcohol, tobacco, illegal substances or activities, adult entertainment and vendors tied to performance-enhancing drugs, deals that run past the athlete's time in the program, and sales of awards or team-issued items.
Do NIL agents for Nebraska athletes have to register?
Nebraska Athletics' policy says representatives must be licensed as required by the State of Nebraska, and its Information for Agents page asks agents and financial advisors to complete the Nebraska Athletics Agent Registration Form before contacting an athlete. State law requires athlete agents, including for endorsement contracts, to register with the Secretary of State (§ 48-2604).
