The rules at Belmont
| Question | What is published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| School NIL policy | "Belmont University Athletics Student-Athlete Name, Image, and Likeness Policy", updated 2025-07-22. It says it "adopts the following provisions of the Tennessee SB536/HB194 as of May 1, 2025", that pay "must be within fair market value" and is "reported to the University on annual basis", that "Employees of Belmont University may not compensate a current or prospective intercollegiate athlete" for NIL, that pay may not be "in exchange for athletic performance or attendance", and that NIL work may not cause missed classes, practices or competitions. Athletes may not sell clothing, shoes or equipment issued by Belmont until their eligibility is exhausted | Belmont Athletics, Student-Athlete NIL Policy (updated 2025-07-22) |
| How deals are disclosed | NCAA: third-party deals of $600 or more are reported to NIL Go within five business days (Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2); Belmont's policy repeats the five-business-day NIL Go rule under "CSC NIL Go Disclosure". Belmont's own process: "All NIL transactions MUST be reported via the Influencer App", and an athlete files a NIL Disclosure Form with the endorsement contract to the Compliance Office "PRIOR to signing any NIL contractual agreement"; Compliance then "has five business days to vet the form and contract", and the athlete signs once approved. Tennessee law says athletes "may be required" to disclose deals to the school (T.C.A. 49-7-2802(d)) | Belmont Athletics, Student-Athlete NIL Policy (2025-07-22); NCAA 2026-27 Division I Manual; /nil/college/tennessee |
| Banned categories | Tennessee law bars NIL activities that promote gambling, tobacco, THC products or derivatives, alcohol and adult entertainment, and lets a school bar activities in conflict with its values (T.C.A. 49-7-2802(g)). Belmont's policy bars deals with entities that "promote gambling, tobacco, alcohol, and adult entertainment or any activities that are reasonably considered to be in conflict with the values of Belmont University as outlined in the Bruin Guide", and any deal that "conflicts or unreasonably competes" with an existing Belmont agreement; if Belmont objects, it "must disclose the relevant terms" | Belmont Athletics, Student-Athlete NIL Policy; /nil/college/tennessee |
| School marks and group licensing | Belmont's policy says athletes "may use official Belmont University or Athletic marks within a third party NIL agreement", subject to Belmont's Brandbook, but Belmont "reserve[s] the right to deny access to official marks"; a product carrying Belmont marks has to be licensed through Belmont's licensing partner, Affinity. Using Belmont facilities needs prior written permission of the Director of Athletics plus Event Services' location rules, waivers and rental fees. Belmont's athletics site links a Belmont NIL Store powered by adidas (Athletic Solutions, announced 2025-10-17); an earlier NIL Store with Campus Ink launched 2023-07-20. A group licensing program: Not published | Belmont Athletics, Student-Athlete NIL Policy, Licensing page and releases (2023-07-20, 2025-10-17) |
| Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission lists Belmont University for 2026-27 and puts the cap at "approximately $21.58 million per school" (read 2026-10-23). Belmont's release of 2026-08-03 says it added Teamworks General Manager and Wallet "to build a first-in-class infrastructure for Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and athletic revenue sharing operations", with funds "delivered directly to athletes through their Wallet accounts". Belmont's 2025-09-10 release adding STUNT cites "roster limits vs. scholarship limits through the House settlement". No Belmont revenue-sharing total or allocation is published | College Sports Commission; Belmont Athletics releases (2025-09-10, 2026-08-03) |
| Collective or NIL group | Not published. No collective is named on Belmont's athletics site, its NIL page or its NIL policy as of 2026-10-23 | Belmont Athletics, Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) page |
| Agents and representation | Belmont's policy: athletes "may secure representation (agent or lawyer), ONLY for Name, Image and Likeness and NOT for future professional athletic contract negotiations"; an athlete agent "must be licensed in the state of Tennessee"; an attorney "must be a member in good standing of The Tennessee Bar or the state in which they practice"; and a representation or NIL contract "may not extend beyond participation in athletic program at institution". Tennessee law: athlete agents are licensed under the Revised Uniform Athlete Agents Act (registration with the Secretary of State, $500, two years), every representative is a fiduciary, and parents, siblings, grandparents, spouses and guardians are not agents (T.C.A. 49-7-2802(h)) | Belmont Athletics, Student-Athlete NIL Policy; /nil/college/tennessee |
| Compliance contact | Belmont University Office of Athletic Compliance; the staff directory lists Heather Copeland, Associate AD for Compliance, 615-460-5486, and John Langdon, Director of Compliance and Student-Athlete Development, 615-460-5609. International athletes are pointed to the International Student and Scholars Office, elizabeth.dean@belmont.edu | Belmont Athletics, Staff Directory; NIL Policy for International Student-Athletes (2026-08-14) |
| State law | In force. Tennessee's T.C.A. 49-7-2801 to 49-7-2804, rewritten by Public Chapter 300 of 2025, lets athletes be paid for NIL, enrollment and roster position and lets schools and affiliated foundations pay unless federal law, a valid court order or a qualifying association rule expressly limits it; its definition of institution includes four-year private colleges such as Belmont (49-7-2801(5)). Under 49-7-2804 a private school and its association may jointly opt out of 49-7-2802(b)(3), (b)(4) and 49-7-2803; no Belmont or Missouri Valley Conference election was found as of 2026-10-23 | /nil/college/tennessee |
What is specific to Belmont
Belmont is a private university in Nashville whose athletics program has no football; it sponsors 18 sports in 2026-27, including STUNT, added as its first new sport in a quarter century. Its NIL policy runs on approval before signing: the disclosure form and contract go into the Influencer app first, Compliance has five business days to check them against Belmont's own contracts and policy, and only then does the athlete sign. Belmont also posts a separate NIL guidance sheet for international athletes, dated 2026-08-14, which says that "under current federal law, international students including student-athletes may not work while physically present in the United States including involvement in NIL activities", that international athletes "may engage in NIL activity and receive compensation for such activity provided the full extent of the NIL activity from start to finish is completed in their home country", and that two possible exceptions (curricular practical training and severe economic hardship) "must be reviewed and approved by the International Student and Scholars Office"; the hardship route also needs USCIS approval. On the revenue side, Belmont announced on 2026-08-03 that its athletes "will transition away from fragmented payment channels" to Teamworks Wallet, which sets aside a percentage of NIL earnings in a tax reserve account and, for international athletes, "can serve as a withholding agent".
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
Questions about NIL at Belmont
Does Belmont pay its athletes?
Belmont is on the College Sports Commission's 2026-27 list of schools taking part in revenue sharing, where the cap is about $21.58 million per school. Belmont announced in August 2026 that it uses Teamworks GM and Wallet for its "athletic revenue sharing operations". It has not published a total or how the money is divided.
How do Belmont athletes report NIL deals?
Belmont's policy says every NIL transaction is reported in the Influencer app, and a disclosure form and the contract go to Compliance before signing, with five business days for review. NCAA rules separately call for reporting outside deals of $600 or more to NIL Go within five business days.
Does Tennessee's NIL law apply to Belmont as a private school?
Yes. Tennessee's law defines an institution as a four-year public or private college in Tennessee (other than Board of Regents schools), so it covers Belmont. Belmont's own policy says it adopts provisions of the 2025 Tennessee act (SB536/HB194). The law also lets a private school and its association jointly opt out of certain association-related sections (49-7-2804); no Belmont or Missouri Valley Conference election was found as of 2026-10-23.
Can international athletes at Belmont make NIL money?
Belmont's guidance for international athletes (dated 2026-08-14) says: "No, under current federal law, international students including student-athletes may not work while physically present in the United States including involvement in NIL activities." It says they "may engage in NIL activity and receive compensation for such activity provided the full extent of the NIL activity from start to finish is completed in their home country", still reported on INFLCR. Two possible exceptions, curricular practical training and severe economic hardship, "must be reviewed and approved by the International Student and Scholars Office", and the hardship route also needs USCIS approval.
Can Belmont athletes use Belmont logos in NIL deals?
Belmont's policy allows official marks within a third-party NIL deal, subject to its Brandbook, and Belmont may deny access to them. A product with Belmont marks has to be licensed through Affinity, Belmont's licensing partner.
