The rules at Tennessee Tech
| Question | What is published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| School NIL policy | Not published as a university policy. The athletics compliance site's student-athlete handbook page links a two-page "NIL Educational Document 7.8.2021" (the PDF was created 2021-07-09), which says NIL pay is allowed "provided you follow all applicable Tennessee Tech policies and State of Tennessee legislation", that pay must be at "the going market rate" and not for performance or for attending Tennessee Tech, and that "NIL ACTIVITIES MUST BE APPROVED BY COMPLIANCE BEFORE YOU BEGIN PARTICIPATION". The July 2024 student-athlete handbook has no NIL section, and the athletics policies it lists (902 to 965) include none on NIL | Tennessee Tech Athletics Compliance, NIL Educational Document (2021-07-08) and Student-Athlete Handbook page |
| How deals are disclosed | NCAA: third-party deals of $600 or more go to NIL Go within five business days (Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2). Tennessee Tech: the NIL Activity Pre-Approval Form, linked from the For Student-Athletes page, asks for the activity's dates, the pay and how it is paid, and the athlete's schedule, with a due date "Prior to participation in NLI activities" and a note that "Failure to disclose may impact the student-athletes' eligibility"; the 2021 document asks for the payer, the activity and the pay. The athletics site also links INFLCR. Tennessee law says disclosure "may be required" | Tennessee Tech Athletics, NIL Activity Pre-Approval Form and For Student-Athletes page; NCAA 2026-27 Division I Manual; /nil/college/tennessee |
| Banned categories | Tennessee law bars NIL activities that promote gambling, tobacco, THC products or derivatives, alcohol and adult entertainment, and lets a school bar activities that conflict with its values (T.C.A. 49-7-2802(g)). The 2021 document lists "sports gambling, adult entertainment, tobacco or nicotine products and alcohol or alcohol distributors" and NIL that conflicts with Tennessee Tech agreements, "which can include athletic gear and soft drinks, or other colleges or universities" | Tennessee Tech Athletics Compliance, NIL Educational Document (2021-07-08); /nil/college/tennessee |
| School marks and group licensing | The 2021 document: "You cannot use any TTU logos, marks or identifiers in NIL activities", no TTU gear, no official TTU phrases or fan cheers (it names "WINGS UP"), no content provided by TTU, no facility use unless the athlete pays "the going rental rate and secure[s] permission", and no sale of team-issued gear until eligibility is exhausted. A group licensing program: Not published | Tennessee Tech Athletics Compliance, NIL Educational Document (2021-07-08) |
| Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission puts the 2026-27 cap at approximately $21.58 million per school and lists Tennessee Technological University for 2026-27, filed under the Ohio Valley Conference although Tennessee Tech joined the SoCon on 2026-07-01. Tennessee Tech's 2025-06-27 release says it opted in on June 27 for 2025-26, that each school "will be able to decide how to distribute the internal NIL among its sports teams", and that internal NIL "will allow the University to manage donor support holistically" with donors giving "charitably through the Tennessee Tech Athletics Association". No 2026-27 total or division by sport was published | Tennessee Tech Athletics, opt-in release (2025-06-27); College Sports Commission |
| Collective or NIL group | Tennessee Tech's 2025-02-20 release named The Golden Eagle Collective "the official Name, Image, and Likeness ("NIL") collective for Tennessee Tech Athletics", which "operates independently" but "works hand-in-hand with Tennessee Tech Athletics", with an alumnus as executive director. The 2025-06-27 release calls it an "affiliated entity" whose payments are reviewed through NIL Go. The web address given in the release did not load on 2026-10-24, and the same name without "www" forwards to a Tennessee Tech Athletics giving site that does not mention the collective, so the collective's current status was not confirmed | Tennessee Tech Athletics releases (2025-02-20, 2025-06-27) |
| Agents and representation | The 2021 document allows an agent or third party for NIL advice, representation and marketing, not for professional opportunities, and says "Agents must be registered with the State of TN and TTU Compliance". Tennessee Tech's agent registration page says agents "must register with the Tennessee Tech University Compliance Office and receive permission before contact any student-athletes", and TTU Policy 965 (2017) has in-person agent meetings held in athletic facilities with permission. Tennessee law requires agent registration under Part 21 ($500, two years) | Tennessee Tech Athletics, Agent Registration; TTU Policy 965; NIL Educational Document; /nil/college/tennessee |
| Compliance contact | Tennessee Tech Athletics Compliance. | State law | In force. Tennessee's Part 28 (T.C.A. 49-7-2801 to 2804), rewritten in 2025, lets athletes be paid for NIL, enrollment and roster position and lets a four-year school and its affiliated foundations pay unless federal law, a valid court order or a qualifying association rule limits it. Coverage of Tennessee Tech is uncertain: the part excludes a school "governed by the board of regents of the state university and community college system", and the 2016 FOCUS Act lists Tennessee Technological University among the "board of regents state universities" while vesting its "management and governance" in its own state university board (Public Chapter 869 of 2016). No court ruling or state statement on the point was found | /nil/college/tennessee; Public Chapter 869 of 2016 |
What is specific to Tennessee Tech
Tennessee Tech is new to the Southern Conference. After 75 years in the Ohio Valley Conference it joined the SoCon on 2026-07-01 as its 11th member, in 14 of its 15 sports (all but beach volleyball), and Tennessee Tech's release of that day quotes the SoCon's Geoff Cabe: "Tech is now our 11th member". A year earlier, new Director of Athletics Casey Fox explained the revenue-sharing decision at unusual length: he said the finalized roster grandfathering provision "played a key role", and the release walked through what opting in means at a mid-major, from roster limits replacing scholarship caps to donor gifts routed "charitably through the Tennessee Tech Athletics Association" and outside payments from The Golden Eagle Collective going through NIL Go. Its athlete-facing NIL rules are older: a two-page 2021 document and a pre-approval form hosted on the athletics compliance site.
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
