The rules at Kansas
| Question | What is published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| School NIL policy | Not published in readable form. KU's Jayhawks Ascend announcement (dated 2021-07-30 on the page) links an "Official KAI NIL Policy" and its FAQ and resources files (July 2021), but each link returned a not-found page on 2026-10-21. Jayhawks Ascend has four pillars: personal brand management, name, image and likeness protection (compliance education), KU resource engagement and post-KU preparedness | Kansas Athletics, Jayhawks Ascend announcement (2021-07-30) |
| How deals are disclosed | NCAA: third-party deals of $600 or more are reported to NIL Go within five business days (Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2); KU's agents page posts NIL Go guides for sponsors and institutions (posted 2025-11-03). KU's Opendorse marketplace announcement (dated 2022-08-25) says athletes "disclose NIL activities to their institution, all within the Opendorse app"; a newer KU disclosure rule was not found. No Kansas statute sets a disclosure rule | Kansas Athletics, Opendorse NIL Marketplace (2022-08-25) and Agents page; NCAA Division I Manual 2026-27 |
| Banned categories | No Kansas statute lists NIL categories. KU's own list: Not published | /nil/college/kansas |
| School marks and group licensing | Not published for NIL. KU's Office of Trademark Licensing (Director of Licensing, kai-licensing@ku.edu) takes requests for permission to use KU marks, and the athletics licensing page links KU's Trademark Licensing Policy | Kansas Athletics, Trademark Licensing and Contact KU Licensing |
| Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission lists KU as participating in 2026-27 and puts the cap at "approximately $21.58 million per school" (read 2026-10-21). No KU allocation was found on its athletics site. No Kansas statute addresses school payments; H.B. 2800 (2026), which would have barred state money and student fees for NIL pay, died in committee | College Sports Commission; /nil/college/kansas |
| Collective or NIL group | A Kansas Athletics story dated 2022-08-22 on its page (its web address carries 2024/5/22) says the Director of NIL, Athlete Brand Development and Partnerships would manage "communication with Mass St. Collective and third-party NIL groups". That story is the only KU source found that names Mass St. Collective; its status on 2026-10-21 was not confirmed from a primary source. KU runs an Opendorse-powered NIL Marketplace (announced 2022-08-25) where fans, brands, sponsors and donors "can browse, book, pitch and pay any KU student-athlete for NIL activities" | Kansas Athletics, NIL directors story (2022-08-22) and NIL Marketplace story (2022-08-25) |
| Agents and representation | KU requires "any individual who serves as an agent, runner, financial planner, sports marketing representative, sports public relations firm, brand manager, or an employee of any of those described to notify the Compliance Office prior to contacting a Kansas student-athlete with remaining eligibility, or his/her family". Kansas law: athlete agents register with the Secretary of State ($500, two years), and an agency contract includes one to negotiate an endorsement contract (K.S.A. 44-1517, 44-1519, 44-1524) | Kansas Athletics Compliance, Agents; /nil/college/kansas |
| Compliance contact | Kansas Athletics Compliance Office, Allen Fieldhouse, 1651 Naismith Dr, Lawrence, KS 66045; 785.864.4200; compliance@ku.edu | Kansas Athletics Compliance |
| State law | Kansas has no college NIL statute (H.B. 2264 died in 2022 and H.B. 2800 in 2026); the 2003 Uniform Athlete Agents Act (K.S.A. 44-1516 to 44-1536) requires agent registration with the Secretary of State; no statute | /nil/college/kansas |
What is specific to Kansas
KU is a Power Four school in a state with no NIL statute, so its rules are the NCAA's and its own. Its published NIL materials center on Jayhawks Ascend (2021), a program with four pillars: personal brand management (with Opendorse and INFLCR), name, image and likeness protection through compliance education (with Athliance and Opendorse Ready), KU resource engagement such as free legal services and entrepreneurship certificates for non-business majors, and post-KU preparedness including financial training with Meritrust and creating an LLC. KU's agent rule names more than agents: it requires sports marketing representatives, sports public relations firms and brand managers to notify Compliance before any contact with an athlete or family. The 2021 KU NIL policy that the Ascend page links no longer loads, so the school's written NIL rules are not publicly readable as of 2026-10-21.
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
Questions about NIL at Kansas
Does Kansas pay its athletes?
KU is on the College Sports Commission's list of schools participating in revenue sharing for 2026-27, and the Commission puts the 2026-27 cap at about $21.58 million per school. No KU breakdown of that money was found on its athletics site. Kansas has no statute that allows or bars school payments to athletes.
How do Kansas Jayhawks athletes report NIL deals?
NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2 and 22.2.2.2 call for reporting third-party deals of $600 or more to NIL Go within five business days. KU's 2022 NIL Marketplace announcement says athletes disclose NIL activity to KU within the Opendorse app. Kansas law sets no disclosure rule of its own.
What NIL collective works with Kansas?
A Kansas Athletics story dated 2022-08-22 names Mass St. Collective among the third-party NIL groups its NIL director communicates with. Its current status was not confirmed from a primary source on 2026-10-21. KU also runs an official Opendorse-powered NIL Marketplace.
Does an NIL agent have to register to work with a KU athlete?
Two rules apply. KU requires agents, sports marketing representatives, brand managers and similar advisors to notify the Compliance Office before contacting a KU athlete or family. Kansas law requires athlete agents to register with the Secretary of State ($500 for two years), and an agency contract includes one to negotiate an endorsement contract.
Is there a Kansas NIL law?
Not for college athletes. H.B. 2264 passed the Kansas House in 2021 and died in 2022, and H.B. 2800 died in committee in 2026. The state page covers the history and the 2003 agent act.
