The rules at Northern Illinois
| Question | What is published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| School NIL policy | NIU publishes its rules on its NIL page (niuhuskies.com/feature/nil), in a one-page Student-Athlete NIL Addendum (dated 2024-10-01) tied to the financial aid agreement, and in the 2025-26 Student-Athlete Handbook. By signing the aid agreement, prospective athletes "agree to follow all NCAA rules and regulations and Illinois state law"; the addendum lets NIU impose reasonable limits on NIL dates and times, requires team-issued gear at team activities and bars selling or exchanging items received from NIU for athletics as part of an NIL agreement. Athletes acknowledge that NIU's use of their NIL in news releases, advertisements and other activities directly related to NIU Athletics "does not constitute an NIL activity for which I am owed compensation" | NIU Athletics, NIL page, NIL Addendum (2024) and 2025-26 Student-Athlete Handbook |
| How deals are disclosed | NIL Go for third-party deals of $600 or more within five business days (NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2); the handbook's NCAA summary says deals with entities or individuals associated with an institution "with a total value over $600 must be reported through NIL Go". NIU's own rule, in ARMS, is worded several ways: the addendum says "within 14 days of the completed contract or deal" to the athletic department; the NIL page says disclosures "should be completed within 14 days of an agreed upon contract" and lists the parties, terms, any professional service provider and that provider's fee; the handbook says "within 14 days of the agreement" to the Huskie Athletic Compliance Office and, elsewhere, "within 14 days of a signed contract". Deals of $500 or more need a written contract with the disclosure. Illinois law: disclose all publicity rights agreements as the school prescribes, with a written contract at $500 or more (110 ILCS 190/20(c), 15(f)) | NIU Athletics, NIL page, NIL Addendum (2024) and 2025-26 Student-Athlete Handbook; NCAA Division I Manual 2026-27; /nil/college/illinois |
| Banned categories | NIU's addendum bars NIL agreements involving sports betting, gambling, tobacco, alcohol, controlled substances, cannabis or marijuana, alternative or electronic nicotine products (e.g., vaping products), performance-enhancing supplements, adult entertainment, and any entity "reasonably inconsistent with the values or mission of NIU" or bringing "disrepute, embarrassment, scandal, ridicule" to it, and deals for services during NIU athletic or team activities that conflict with an NIU contract, rule or other requirement. Illinois law sets a similar list for Illinois college athletes (110 ILCS 190/20(i)) | NIU Athletics, NIL Addendum (2024); /nil/college/illinois |
| School marks and group licensing | Athletes need prior approval to use NIU's name, marks, logos or facilities, including photos or videos in team-issued apparel, and approval "may be revoked at any time". The NIL page routes marks and facility questions to the general manager of Huskie Athletics Sponsorships (Van Wagner) and the senior associate AD for collegiate advancement and external affairs, and links an Adidas NIL ambassador program. A group licensing program: Not published | NIU Athletics, NIL Addendum (2024) and NIL page |
| Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission's 2026-27 table lists Northern Illinois University as a participating school, filed under "Mid-American Conference", and the commission puts the 2026-27 cap at "approximately $21.58 million per school" (read 2026-10-24). On 2026-01-14 NIU Athletics launched the Boneyard Competitive Excellence Fund, which it describes as a move "from a traditional third-party NIL collective, to what will now be a partnership between NIU Athletics and the NIU Foundation"; contributions "may be utilized for revenue-sharing opportunities and more". No NIU amounts or allocation were found. The 2025-26 handbook summarizes NCAA rules as letting schools enter NIL deals with athletes "for the period of their eligibility". Illinois law lets a school pay athletes where a settlement, association rule or school policy allows (110 ILCS 190/15(e)) and keeps NIL deal terms out of FOIA (§ 40) | College Sports Commission; NIU Athletics, Boneyard Competitive Excellence Fund release (2026-01-14) and 2025-26 Student-Athlete Handbook; /nil/college/illinois |
| Collective or NIL group | No active collective named by NIU. NIU's 2022-12-15 release launching the Boneyard Victor E. Collective, which it said was "created by a third party", now carries the note: "As of 2025, the Boneyard Victor E. Collective is no longer active, for information on NIL opportunities at NIU, visit niuhuskies.com/feature/nil". NIU's 2026 Boneyard Competitive Excellence Fund is run with the NIU Foundation through the Huskie Athletic Fund. NIU's own marketplace is the NIU Huskies NIL Marketplace on Opendorse (launched 2022-12-15) | NIU Athletics, Marketplace and collective release (2022-12-15, with 2025 note), Boneyard Competitive Excellence Fund release (2026-01-14) and NIL page |
| Agents and representation | NIU's addendum allows an NIL agent or lawyer for NIL agreements, bars NIL agents from "shopping" or marketing athletes to professional teams or other institutions, and requires disclosure of a representation agreement in ARMS "within 7 days of the agreement"; the handbook says agents "will be required to complete an agent registration form with HACO prior to providing you with solicitation materials". Illinois law: no school may stop an athlete from using an athlete agent or attorney, there is no state agent registration (the Athlete Agents Act was repealed in 2017), and a representation agreement signed while competing may not run past the athlete's participation | NIU Athletics, NIL Addendum (2024) and 2025-26 Student-Athlete Handbook; /nil/college/illinois |
| Compliance contact | Huskie Athletic Compliance Office (HACO), NIU Athletics; the compliance page lists an Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance | NIU Athletics, Compliance |
| State law | In force. Illinois' Student-Athlete Endorsement Rights Act (110 ILCS 190) lets college athletes earn NIL pay, bars listed categories, has athletes disclose deals as the school sets, and since 2025 lets schools pay athletes where a settlement or rule allows | /nil/college/illinois |
What is specific to Northern Illinois
Northern Illinois, in DeKalb, splits its sports across three conferences from 2026-27: 14 of the Horizon League's 19 sports, rejoined on 2026-07-01 after years in the Mid-American Conference; football as a football-only Mountain West member and gymnastics also in the Mountain West; and wrestling in the Pac-12 as an affiliate member. Athletic director Sean Frazier wrote on 2026-08-19 that NIU begins "a new era in the Mountain West, Horizon League and Pac-12". NIU's NIL rules are built around Illinois' statute rather than a separate school policy: a one-page addendum tied to the financial aid agreement, a 14-day ARMS disclosure and a written contract at $500. NIU is also open about its collective history: the 2022 release launching Boneyard Victor E. now says that collective is no longer active as of 2025, and NIU's 2026 Boneyard Competitive Excellence Fund replaces the third-party model with a fund run with the NIU Foundation. Northern Illinois is not Northern Iowa or Northern Kentucky.
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
Questions about NIL at Northern Illinois
Does Northern Illinois pay its athletes?
The College Sports Commission's 2026-27 table lists NIU as participating in revenue sharing, and the commission puts the 2026-27 cap at about $21.58 million per school. NIU says gifts to its Boneyard Competitive Excellence Fund may be used for revenue sharing. Illinois law allows school payments where a settlement or rule allows them. NIU has not published amounts or how it divides the money.
How do NIU athletes report NIL deals?
In ARMS, within 14 days; NIU's addendum, NIL page and handbook word the starting point differently (the completed contract or deal, an agreed upon contract, the agreement, a signed contract). Deals of $500 or more need a written contract. NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2 and 22.2.2.2 also call for reporting third-party deals of $600 or more to NIL Go within five business days.
What NIL collective works with Northern Illinois?
None that NIU names now. Its 2022 release launching the Boneyard Victor E. Collective carries a note that the collective is no longer active as of 2025. In 2026 NIU launched the Boneyard Competitive Excellence Fund, a partnership between NIU Athletics and the NIU Foundation, and it points athletes to its NIL page and Opendorse marketplace.
What conference is Northern Illinois in for 2026-27?
The Horizon League for most sports, which NIU rejoined on 2026-07-01; the Mountain West for football, as a football-only member, and for gymnastics; and the Pac-12 for wrestling, as an affiliate member. NIU's NIL rules and NCAA reporting are the same whichever conference a team plays in.
Do NIL agents have to register to work with NIU athletes?
Illinois has no athlete agent registration; it repealed its Athlete Agents Act in 2017. NIU's handbook asks agents to complete a registration form with its compliance office before giving athletes solicitation materials, and athletes disclose a representation agreement in ARMS within seven days.
