The rules at Marquette
| Question | What is published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| School NIL policy | Marquette publishes "Student-Athlete Name, Image and Likeness Policies" in two places. The stand-alone PDF is dated July 2021 (posted 2021-09-30, with an identical copy posted 2021-10-06). The 2026-27 Student-Athlete Parent Guide (posted 2026-08-25) reprints the same policy with a new reporting section. Both say Marquette "supports the opportunity for our student-athletes to be compensated individually" for NIL "consistent with NCAA rules", that NIL activity may not be an inducement to attend Marquette or conflict with an institutional sponsorship agreement, and that "the compensation is not provided by Marquette University or its employees" | Marquette Athletics, NIL Policy (July 2021) and 2026-27 Parent Guide |
| How deals are disclosed | The 2026-27 parent guide says athletes "must disclose any agreements for the use of their NIL activities to their INFLCR account" and that "all deals $600 and above must be disclosed to NILGo within five (5) days of the execution of an agreement". NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2 and 22.2.2.2 set the NIL Go window at five business days. The July 2021 PDF says disclosure goes to the Office of Athletic Compliance. No Wisconsin statute sets a disclosure rule for a private college | Marquette Athletics, 2026-27 Parent Guide and NIL Policy (July 2021); NCAA Division I Manual 2026-27 |
| Banned categories | Marquette bars NIL activity involving a product, service or business "that reflects adversely on Marquette University or its mission and values as a Catholic, Jesuit university", including "alcohol, tobacco or vaping products, gambling, illegal or recreational drugs, prophylactics, pornographic, sexually explicit or sexually suggestive entertainment or promotions or racist, sexist, hateful or demeaning language". It also bars NIL activity during NCAA countable or required athletically related activities, team media commitments and Marquette promotional or fundraising events. The banned list in Wis. Stat. § 36.11(12)(h) covers University of Wisconsin System athletes, not Marquette | Marquette Athletics, 2026-27 Parent Guide; /nil/college/wisconsin |
| School marks and group licensing | The policy says athletes "may not use the University's facilities, uniforms, trademarks, logos or other marks in NIL activities without the prior written approval from the University" and may not identify themselves as Marquette athletes in NIL activity without prior approval from the Office of Athletic Compliance. Marquette's 2023 NIL FAQ says athletes may identify themselves by team, and that companies need prior approval from the NIL general manager and Marquette Sports Properties to use athletics marks. The Brandr Group assists in "managing and administering the school's program of co-branded licensing, sponsorship and media utilizing student-athlete group rights" (Marq-U announcement 2021-09-30; Strategic Partnerships 2023-06-09), and the NIL Store powered by Campus Ink is "the official NIL Provider of Marquette Athletics", selling merchandise "officially licensed by Marquette University" (store opened 2023-08-22) | Marquette Athletics, Parent Guide, NIL FAQ (2023-06-09), Marq-U (2021-09-30), Strategic Partnerships (2023-06-09), NIL Store (2023-08-22) |
| Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission lists Marquette as participating in 2026-27 and puts the cap at "approximately $21.58 million per school" (read 2026-10-22). Marquette has not published how it divides that money. The 2026-27 parent guide says "marketing agents and financial advisors may be retained or consulted for issues relating to NIL and Revenue Sharing" | College Sports Commission; Marquette Athletics, 2026-27 Parent Guide |
| Collective or NIL group | Marquette Athletics stories describe Be the Difference NIL as "the exclusive NIL collective supporting Marquette student-athletes" (2024-10-30) and as "a registered Wisconsin 501(C)(3)" of donors and alumni (2024-03-19). On 2026-10-22 its web address, bethedifferencenil.org, redirected to gomarquette.com. Marquette also runs the Ring Out Ahoya Local Exchange (INFLCR), where businesses and individuals approved by the Office of Athletic Compliance can propose deals and pay athletes (NIL FAQ, 2023-06-09) | Marquette Athletics, Be the Difference stories (2024) and NIL FAQ (2023-06-09) |
| Agents and representation | The policy says Marquette "will not prevent or restrict a student-athlete from obtaining representation by an athlete agent or an attorney for the sole purpose of representing the student-athlete in matters pertaining to NIL activities". The 2023 NIL FAQ says that representation may not also represent the athlete in securing professional athletic opportunities. Wisconsin law: athlete agents, including agents who negotiate endorsement contracts, register with the Department of Safety and Professional Services, and the athlete may cancel an agency contract within 14 days (Wis. Stat. §§ 440.99 to 440.9985) | Marquette Athletics, Parent Guide and NIL FAQ; /nil/college/wisconsin |
| Compliance contact | Marquette Office of Athletic Compliance; its Compliance page lists three staff, including the Director of Compliance at (414) 288-5328 (the athletics staff directory lists the same number under Compliance). The 2026-27 parent guide sends NIL policy questions to the Director of NIL Strategy and Athlete Marketing at madison.dunker@marquette.edu | Marquette Athletics, Compliance and Staff Directory; 2026-27 Parent Guide |
| State law | Wisconsin's NIL statute, Wis. Stat. § 36.11(12) (in force 2026-04-10), governs University of Wisconsin System schools; for private colleges such as Marquette, § 39.91 says only that an NIL agreement does not make an athlete an employee, and the Uniform Athlete Agents Act covers agents; status In force | /nil/college/wisconsin |
What is specific to Marquette
Marquette is a private Catholic, Jesuit university, and its NIL policy ties its banned list to that mission: next to the usual alcohol, tobacco and gambling categories, it names prophylactics and "racist, sexist, hateful or demeaning language". Its NIL program is called Marq-U, launched on 2021-09-30 with Opendorse, The Brandr Group, TEAM LAMMI and the university's colleges of business, communications and law, and announced as a "re-launch" on 2023-06-06, with Altius Sports Partners and INFLCR among its partners. Marquette was "the first representative from the BIG EAST" in the Altius general manager program, and a Marquette Athletics story dated 2023-03-21 announced its first full-time, on-campus NIL general manager. The 2026-27 parent guide carries the 2021 policy forward with a new rule for the House era: deals go into INFLCR, and deals of $600 or more go to NIL Go. Wisconsin's 2026 NIL law mostly governs the University of Wisconsin System, so for Marquette athletes the rules come from the NCAA, the College Sports Commission and Marquette itself.
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
Questions about NIL at Marquette
Does Marquette pay its athletes?
Marquette is on the College Sports Commission's list of schools participating in revenue sharing for 2026-27, and the Commission puts the 2026-27 cap at about $21.58 million per school. Marquette has not published how it divides that money. Its NIL policy says NIL compensation "is not provided by Marquette University or its employees", which covers NIL deals rather than revenue sharing.
How do Marquette athletes report NIL deals?
The 2026-27 parent guide says athletes disclose NIL agreements in their INFLCR account and that deals of $600 and above go to NIL Go within five days of signing. The NCAA bylaw sets that window at five business days.
What NIL deals are Marquette athletes not allowed to do?
Marquette's policy bars NIL activity that reflects adversely on the university or its Catholic, Jesuit mission, naming alcohol, tobacco or vaping, gambling, illegal or recreational drugs, prophylactics, sexually explicit or suggestive promotions, and racist, sexist, hateful or demeaning language. It also bars NIL activity during team activities and team media commitments.
What NIL collective works with Marquette?
Marquette Athletics stories from 2024 describe Be the Difference NIL as the exclusive collective supporting Marquette athletes, a Wisconsin 501(c)(3). On 2026-10-22 its web address, bethedifferencenil.org, redirected to gomarquette.com. Marquette also runs the Ring Out Ahoya Local Exchange on INFLCR for businesses and fans.
Does Wisconsin's new NIL law apply to Marquette?
Mostly not. Wis. Stat. § 36.11(12), in force since 2026-04-10, covers University of Wisconsin System athletes. For private colleges like Marquette, § 39.91 says an NIL agreement does not make an athlete an employee. Wisconsin's athlete agent law applies to agents working with any Wisconsin athlete.
