| School NIL policy | Two documents. Board of Visitors Policy 1901, "Policy on Compensation to Student-Athletes for Use of their Name, Image, or Likeness" (approved 2025-10-10, review 2030-10-10), covers NIL pay by ODU "for actual services rendered", bars pay "for participation in academic or athletic activities", bars student fees for NIL pay and requires annual NIL education. The athletics policy "Name, Image, and Likeness Use by Student-Athletes" (effective 2021-07-01, posted again in February 2024) says "Neither ODU nor any of ODU's affiliated Conferences can provide prospective student-athletes or student-athletes with compensation for their NIL" | ODU Board of Visitors, Policy 1901; ODU Athletics, NIL Policy (2021) |
| How deals are disclosed | Athletics policy: "At least ten business days prior to executing the agreement", the athlete completes the Disclosure of NIL Activities workflow in ARMS; compliance has "a reasonable period of time" to review, during which signing is not permitted; a denial can be appealed within 10 business days to "a committee of non-athletics University officials and general counsel"; later changes are disclosed within three business days. Virginia law: disclosure to the school before executing an NIL agreement, in a manner the school designates (§ 23.1-408.1(I)). NCAA: third-party deals of $600 or more go to NIL Go within five business days (Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2) | ODU Athletics, NIL Policy (2021); /nil/college/virginia; NCAA Division I Manual 2026-27 |
| Banned categories | Virginia law bars NIL pay connected with alcohol, adult entertainment, cannabis (not hemp), controlled substances, performance enhancing drugs, drug paraphernalia, tobacco and nicotine products, weapons, and casinos or gambling including sports betting (§ 23.1-408.1(F)); Policy 1901 adopts those prohibitions. The 2021 athletics policy lists casinos or gambling, alcohol, NCAA-banned substances "including tobacco and marijuana", and "Anything deemed to not be in the best interests of the University as determined by the athletics director or his designee", and bars deals that conflict with an ODU agreement | ODU Board of Visitors, Policy 1901; ODU Athletics, NIL Policy (2021); /nil/college/virginia |
| School marks and group licensing | Policy 1901 (2025): written permission from ODU before using "any university marks, intellectual property, issued apparel or equipment, or facilities in NIL activities". The 2021 athletics policy says athletes "may not use any ODU marks, facilities, or team-issued apparel or gear while participating in non-institutional activities using their NIL". Group licensing: ODU and The Brandr Group announced a voluntary group licensing program on 2022-09-16 for co-branded products using ODU marks. | Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission puts the 2026-27 cap at approximately $21.58 million per school and lists Old Dominion University as participating in 2026-27 (read 2026-10-23). Director of Athletics Wood Selig's statement of 2025-06-07 asked donors to help ODU "financially compensate our student-athletes at the highest possible level". Policy 1901 governs ODU's own NIL payments and requires each to be "agreed upon in writing and fully executed". ODU's 2026-07-24 release credits Moses with "building our NIL and revenue-share infrastructure". No total is published | College Sports Commission; ODU Athletics, Selig statement on the House settlement (2025-06-07) and Moses release (2026-07-24); ODU Board of Visitors, Policy 1901 |
| Collective or NIL group | Pride of ODU. Formed in November 2023 by alumni and described then as "not directly affiliated" with ODU Athletics or ODAF; ODU's 2025-11-10 release says ODAF and ODU Athletics "have formally taken control" of it, with ODAF handling all fundraising, Dr. Ron Moses to "negotiate and execute NIL contracts", $12 monthly memberships continuing, and "all future donations" tax deductible. ODAF's 2026 Gameplan (March 2026) presents a new four-tier subscription platform of Old Dominion Athletics, starting at $12 a month, as "Your former Pride of ODU Membership". Moses left to become Robert Morris's athletic director (ODU release, 2026-07-24); who now negotiates ODU's NIL contracts is not published. | State law | Va. Code § 23.1-408.1 (2022, expanded in 2024 by HB 1505) protects athletes' NIL pay and representation, bans nine deal categories, requires disclosure to the school before signing, bars associations and conferences from stopping a Virginia school paying its athletes for NIL, and requires board-approved school NIL policies; since 2026-07-01, § 23.1-408.2 limits use of athletes' biometric data. What is specific to Old Dominion
ODU folded its collective into the university. The Pride of ODU began in November 2023 as an alumni group "not directly affiliated" with the athletics department; two years later ODU Athletics and the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation took it over, citing the House settlement. The 2025-11-10 release splits the old collective's work three ways: ODAF raises the money, Moses negotiates and signs NIL contracts (Selig said, "We don't call him a general manager, but he's serving in that role"), and the external affairs staff run the $12-a-month memberships, which ODAF's 2026 Gameplan folds into a new subscription platform. The department is changing hands: Moses left for Robert Morris in July 2026, Selig retires as director of athletics on 2026-12-31, and Tim House takes over on 2027-01-01. For athletes, the 2021 athletics policy still sets a long lead time: it says athletes "must" complete the ARMS disclosure at least ten business days before signing and gives a denied athlete an appeal to a committee of non-athletics officials and general counsel. ODU's athletics site labels its NIL page "Complete Champion (NIL)".
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
Questions about NIL at Old Dominion
Does Old Dominion pay its athletes?
Yes. The College Sports Commission lists ODU as participating in revenue sharing for 2026-27, with a cap of approximately $21.58 million per school, and ODU's Board of Visitors adopted Policy 1901 in October 2025 to govern ODU's own NIL payments. ODU's 2025-11-10 release says it has NIL agreements with more than 100 athletes. ODU has not published totals or how it divides the money.
What NIL collective works with Old Dominion?
The Pride of ODU, which ODU Athletics and the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation announced on 2025-11-10 they had taken over. Under that release ODAF raises the money and Dr. Ron Moses negotiated NIL contracts; Moses left for Robert Morris in July 2026. ODAF's 2026 Gameplan presents a new Old Dominion Athletics subscription, starting at $12 a month, as the former Pride of ODU membership.
How do ODU athletes report NIL deals?
ODU's athletics policy (effective 2021-07-01) says athletes "must" complete the Disclosure of NIL Activities workflow in ARMS at least ten business days before signing, and Virginia law requires disclosure before signing. Third-party deals of $600 or more also go to NIL Go within five business days (NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2).
What happens if ODU denies an NIL deal?
Under ODU's athletics policy, the athlete is told the reasons and can appeal within 10 business days. The appeal goes to a committee of non-athletics university officials and general counsel.
Can ODU athletes use the Monarchs logo in NIL deals?
Board of Visitors Policy 1901 (2025) requires ODU's written permission, while the 2021 athletics policy still says athletes may not use ODU marks in non-institutional NIL activities. ODU announced a voluntary group licensing program with The Brandr Group for co-branded merchandise in 2022.
