The rules at Furman
| Question | What is published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| School NIL policy | "Furman University Name, Image, and Likeness Policy" (each page marked "Revised 07/2022"; posted on the athletics NIL page as FU_NIL_Policy_2023_FINAL). It allows pay "only for third-party endorsements, the student-athlete's non-athletic work product, or activities related to a business that the student-athlete owns", from "Third Parties that are not affiliated with Furman", and not for athletic participation or performance or as an inducement to enroll or stay. The NIL page also links a 2021 "Furman NIL FAQ" and the 2021 South Carolina bill (S. 685). No university-level NIL policy or board document was found | Furman Athletics, NIL page, Furman NIL Policy (revised 07/2022) and NIL FAQ (2021) |
| How deals are disclosed | NCAA: third-party deals of $600 or more go to NIL Go within five business days (Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2). Furman's policy: athletes "must disclose all NIL Activities to the Furman Athletics Compliance Office using the NOCAP Sports software platform as soon as possible but in no case less than seven (7) business days in advance of conducting NIL Activities", and changes seven business days in advance; "Furman does not approve or deny NIL Activities, but may prohibit" ones that violate the policy. Recruits disclose at enrollment or on signing an athletics aid agreement, whichever is earlier. The 2021 FAQ names an NIL Disclosure Form instead. South Carolina's chapter has no disclosure rule since 2024 | Furman NIL Policy; Furman NIL FAQ; NCAA 2026-27 Division I Manual; /nil/college/south-carolina |
| Banned categories | South Carolina law bars NIL pay for endorsing tobacco, alcohol, illegal substances or activities, banned athletic substances, or gambling including sports betting, and lets a school bar uses that conflict with its institutional values (S.C. Code 59-158-40(A)). Furman's policy bars NIL that endorses or promotes gambling and sports betting, banned athletic substances, tobacco and nicotine products and retailers, alcohol, illegal substances or activities including marijuana or cannabis-derived products, hemp-derived products such as CBD, sexually explicit material or nudity, "political messages", "guns", or anything conflicting with NCAA rules, plus NIL that conflicts with Furman's institutional values or "existing sponsorships or other relevant contracts" | Furman NIL Policy; /nil/college/south-carolina |
| School marks and group licensing | The policy says athletes "may not use any Furman intellectual property", including trademarks, logos, copyrighted materials, photos and designs, but "may reference Furman and their student-athlete status"; they may not use Furman facilities or uniforms, or sell items received or bought from Furman, in NIL activities. The 2021 FAQ adds that autographed items carrying Furman's marks may not be sold. The athletics site links an NIL Shop on the Furman Fan Shop for player jerseys and merchandise. A group licensing program: Not published | Furman NIL Policy; Furman NIL FAQ; Furman Athletics site menu |
| Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission puts the 2026-27 cap at approximately $21.58 million per school and lists Furman University for 2026-27 (read 2026-10-24). No Furman statement on revenue sharing, its total or its division by sport was found on its athletics site. Furman's NIL policy, unrevised since 07/2022, still limits NIL pay to third parties not affiliated with Furman | College Sports Commission; Furman NIL Policy |
| Collective or NIL group | Not published. No collective is named on Furman's athletics NIL page or in its policy or FAQ. The 2021 FAQ says donors and Furman Athletic Fund members may offer NIL deals for a business they own or work at if Furman employees play no role and the pay is for work actually performed | Furman Athletics, NIL page; Furman NIL FAQ (2021) |
| Agents and representation | The policy: athletes "may not engage an agent for professional athletic opportunities" but may obtain representation to secure NIL pay; NIL agents "must comply with federal and state laws and regulations", and agents who are attorneys must be in good standing in every state bar they belong to. South Carolina treats an NIL contract as an "agency contract" under its athlete agent act: registration with the Department of Consumer Affairs, a 20 percent cap on the agent's share of an NIL contract, and a 14-day cancellation right | Furman NIL Policy; /nil/college/south-carolina |
| Compliance contact | Furman Athletics Compliance / Student Athlete Services, Alley Gym, 3300 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, S.C. 29613. Tyler Rosenberger, Associate Athletics Director/Compliance & Academic Services, (864) 294-2564 | Furman Athletics, Compliance / Student Athlete Services page (read 2026-10-24) |
| State law | In force. South Carolina's Chapter 158 (S.C. Code 59-158-10 to -60), rewritten in 2024 and amended in 2026, covers athletes at any post-secondary institution, private schools such as Furman included; it lets a school and its staff create and facilitate NIL deals, bars appropriated funds for NIL pay, bans five endorsement categories, bars association penalties for what the chapter allows, and keeps NIL records and per-athlete revenue-sharing amounts private | /nil/college/south-carolina |
What is specific to Furman
Furman's policy is built around a single disclosure step and a short list of people. Every NIL activity is filed in NOCAP Sports at least seven business days before it happens, Furman says it "does not approve or deny" activities but may prohibit ones that break the policy, and only the Athletics Compliance Director and the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance may be involved in an athlete's proposed or ongoing deals; coaches and other employees pass questions to them. Its banned list goes further than South Carolina's statute, adding political messages, guns, hemp-derived products and sexually explicit material. The policy also says athletics aid "may not be reduced or revoked" over NIL that follows it, while NIL pay may count in need-based aid, and it points international athletes on a visa to the Center for Inclusive Communities before any NIL activity.
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
Questions about NIL at Furman
Does Furman pay its athletes?
The College Sports Commission lists Furman University as participating in 2026-27 revenue sharing, with a cap of approximately $21.58 million per school. Furman has not published its own statement, total or division by sport, and its NIL policy, unrevised since July 2022, describes NIL pay only from unaffiliated third parties.
How do Furman athletes report NIL deals?
Furman's policy has athletes disclose every NIL activity in NOCAP Sports at least seven business days before conducting it, and any change seven business days ahead. Third-party deals of $600 or more also go to NIL Go within five business days under NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2 and 22.2.2.2.
What can't Furman athletes endorse?
Furman's policy bars NIL that promotes gambling, banned athletic substances, tobacco and nicotine, alcohol, illegal substances including marijuana, hemp-derived products such as CBD, sexually explicit material, political messages, guns, or anything conflicting with NCAA rules, Furman's values or its sponsorship contracts.
Can Furman athletes wear their uniform or use Furman logos in NIL deals?
No, under the policy: no Furman logos, trademarks, photos or designs, no uniforms and no Furman facilities in NIL activities. Athletes may mention Furman and that they are student-athletes there.
Does South Carolina's NIL law apply to Furman as a private university?
Yes. South Carolina's chapter defines an "institution of higher learning" as any post-secondary educational institution, without limiting it to public schools, so it reaches Furman.
What NIL collective works with Furman?
Furman has not named one. Its athletics NIL page, policy and FAQ list no collective; the 2021 FAQ says donors may offer NIL deals through businesses they own or work at as long as Furman employees are not involved.
