| Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission lists St. Bonaventure as participating in 2026-27 and puts the cap at "approximately $21.58 million per school". The 2025-02-28 release says opting in "will not increase the financial investment the university makes in the Department of Athletics" and that St. Bonaventure "will contribute an estimated $263,000 per year over the next 10 years" to the settlement's payout fund. Basketball Excellence Funds, launched after the settlement's approval in June 2025, were to "assist in sharing additional benefits with student-athletes" in men's and women's basketball; since 2026-03-05 Team Unfurl replaces them as "the primary vehicle for donors to support institutional NIL for both men's and women's basketball". The athletic director said on 2026-03-05 that the annual athletics budget, "including institutional NIL, is roughly $14 million". A 2026-08-25 release and the 2025-26 annual report say donors gave nearly $1.5 million to the men's fund and $60,000 to the women's fund "in support of institutional NIL". The 2025-02-28 release said it would "continue to operate as an important support mechanism"; a 2025-03-06 release announced its business-to-business partnership with 6th Sense Consulting, sharing part of the revenue with Team Unfurl. On 2026-03-05 the University announced plans "to absorb all assets of Team Unfurl" and make the brand the primary vehicle for basketball's institutional NIL, expected "in the next few weeks"; the athletic director's 2026-05-28 year-end letter, repeated in the 2025-26 annual report (posted 2026-10-05), says "we began the process of St. Bonaventure University acquiring Unfurl, LLC", and his 2026-07-02 update said the transition "is scheduled to be completed this summer". On 2026-08-03 St. Bonaventure Athletics announced a $300,000 matching gift challenge, through September 30, for gifts to Team Unfurl, "which funds institutional NIL" for men's basketball. | State law | In force. N.Y. Educ. Law § 6438-c protects NIL pay and representation, has athletes disclose each NIL contract to a designated college official before signing, and lets colleges assert conflicts on listed grounds; the section does not define "college", so its text does not say whether it covers a private university such as St. Bonaventure | /nil/college/new-york |
What is specific to St. Bonaventure
St. Bonaventure is a private university whose athletics department puts basketball at the center of its NIL planning. Its president described opting into the House settlement as "essentially a procedural change" about "the method in which benefits are delivered", and the athletic director wrote in June 2025 that "All but one Atlantic 10 Conference institution has signaled their intent to participate". The money path then changed twice in a year: donor Basketball Excellence Funds opened in June 2025, and in March 2026 the University chose to fold in Team Unfurl, the collective a group of alumni started in 2023, so supporters would see one name for institutional NIL in men's and women's basketball, next to the Sixth Man Club and the Bonnies Athletic Fund for team operations. The athletic director said the move answered "the urgent need for clarity, transparency and efficiency". Its 2025-26 annual report counts approximately 385 student-athletes across the department.
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
Questions about NIL at St. Bonaventure
Does St. Bonaventure pay its athletes?
St. Bonaventure opted into the House settlement (announced 2025-02-28), and the College Sports Commission lists it for 2026-27 with a cap of about $21.58 million per school. The University funds institutional NIL for men's and women's basketball through donor gifts, now under the Team Unfurl name. It has not published how payments are divided.
What is Team Unfurl?
Team Unfurl began in 2023 as an alumni-managed NIL collective for Bonnies basketball. On 2026-03-05 St. Bonaventure announced it would absorb Team Unfurl's assets and use the name as the primary vehicle for institutional NIL in men's and women's basketball, replacing the Basketball Excellence Fund. The athletic director wrote in May 2026 that the University began acquiring Unfurl, LLC, and in August 2026 the department ran a matching gift challenge for Team Unfurl. Completion of the acquisition was not confirmed as of 2026-10-23.
How do St. Bonaventure athletes report NIL deals?
Through NIL Go: NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2 and 22.2.2.2 call for reporting third-party deals of $600 or more within five business days, and the compliance page posts an NIL Go overview. New York's § 6438-c also says athletes disclose NIL contracts to a designated college official before signing; St. Bonaventure has not published its own process.
Does New York's NIL law apply at St. Bonaventure?
N.Y. Educ. Law § 6438-c covers students enrolled at "a college" who play intercollegiate sports, but it does not define "college", so its text does not settle whether a private university is covered. New York's athlete agent law (General Business Law article 39-E) applies to agents separately.
Where can fans buy St. Bonaventure NIL merchandise?
The athletics site's Shop NIL Merchandise page links the St. Bonaventure NIL Store, where it says "The athletes earn from every sale", Influxer personalized gear, an ISlide collection tied to the men's basketball collective, and St. Bonaventure WWE legacy title belts.
Do NIL agents have to register to work with St. Bonaventure athletes?
St. Bonaventure has not posted an agent rule of its own. New York law requires athlete agents to register under General Business Law article 39-E, and both agent and athlete notify the athletic director within 72 hours of signing an agency contract or before the next athletic event, whichever is earlier.
