The rules at Alabama
| Question | What is published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| School NIL policy | The Advantage page (rolltide.com/feature/advantage, undated, read 2026-10-21) carries UA's NIL FAQs. They say a booster or fan may contract with a UA athlete for NIL in exchange for money, goods or services; that NIL pay may not be based on the athlete's athletic performance at UA; that a contract may not require the athlete to compete for or attend UA or any other NCAA school; and that deals have to comply with federal, state, NCAA, SEC and UA rules. The FAQs say: "It is possible, and likely, that federal laws and NCAA legislation will ultimately provide a nationwide, uniform approach to NIL governance, at which point restrictions on these agreements are subject to change." The page also links an "NIL Compensation Policy" on a UA policy server; that link returned "not found" on 2026-10-21 | Alabama Athletics, The Advantage (FAQs) |
| How deals are disclosed | NIL Go for third-party deals of $600 or more within five business days (NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2). Asked whether a booster or fan may contract with a UA athlete for NIL, UA's FAQs answer: "Yes. Before entering such a contract, the SA is required to disclose any proposed contract for use of their NIL to UA." The page names no portal and no number of days for that step | NCAA 2026-27 Division I Manual; Alabama Athletics, The Advantage (FAQs) |
| Banned categories | No Alabama statute lists banned categories now; the 2021 list was repealed in 2022. UA's FAQs say athletes "may be precluded from entering NIL compensation agreements" that conflict with the terms of a current UA contract, that negatively impact or reflect adversely on UA or its Athletics Department, or that involve "tobacco companies, alcoholic beverage companies, sellers or dispensaries of controlled substances, adult entertainment businesses, and business engaged in gambling activities". Other examples of prohibited compensation they list are pay in exchange for property owned by UA (such as a current jersey or equipment) and pay where a non-citizen athlete's visa generally prohibits employment | Alabama Athletics, The Advantage (FAQs) |
| School marks and group licensing | The Advantage page lists group rights licensing through Brandr and OneTeam; a long-term arrangement with Fanatics to create, market and sell NIL merchandise, including at The Authentic store at Bryant-Denny Stadium; and a Catapult content licensing program that lets athletes use game photos and video royalty-free for personal use, with a commercial license "subject to Alabama/SEC approval". The page's NIL Staff list names a Licensing/Video/Image Rights contact, and its Resources list links University Trademarks | Alabama Athletics, The Advantage (Access, Resources, NIL Staff) |
| Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission puts the 2026-27 cap at approximately $21.58 million per school and says every SEC member participates in revenue sharing in 2026-27; schools report payments in its CAPS system within five business days of final signature. Director of Athletics Greg Byrne's statement, posted on his X account on 2025-06-07, says Alabama Athletics "will now add to that by offering new scholarships while fully funding revenue sharing"; it gives no dollar figure, and no revenue-sharing figure was found on rolltide.com | College Sports Commission, Revenue Sharing and Participating Schools; Greg Byrne on X (2025-06-07) |
| Collective or NIL group | Yea Alabama, which Alabama Athletics announced on 2023-02-02 as "the official name, image and likeness entity of The University of Alabama" and still names on The Advantage page (2026-10-21). The 2023 release described fan subscriptions paid monthly or annually, tax-deductible contributions to the Walk of Champions nonprofit and brand endorsement opportunities. The athletics department's Built By Bama Home Team, which connects businesses, donors and supporters, describes itself as "a Powerful Network uniting Crimson Tide Sports Marketing, the Crimson Tide Foundation and Yea Alabama" | Alabama Athletics, Yea Alabama release (2023-02-02), The Advantage and Home Team pages |
| Agents and representation | UA's compliance page sends agent questions to the compliance office, and The Advantage page lists an "Agent Registration" contact. Alabama's Revised Uniform Athlete Agents Act covers anyone who solicits an athlete into an agency contract, which includes an endorsement contract: registration with the Secretary of State, notice to the athletic director within 72 hours after signing or before the next athletic event, whichever is first, and a 14-day right to cancel (Code of Ala. §§ 8-26B-4, 8-26B-11, 8-26B-12) | Alabama Athletics, Compliance and The Advantage; Code of Ala. Chapter 26B of Title 8 |
| Compliance contact | Alabama Athletics Compliance, Mal Moore Building, 323 Paul Bryant Drive, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487, compliance@ia.ua.edu. NIL questions go to advantage@ia.ua.edu or 205-348-3600 | Alabama Athletics, Compliance and The Advantage (NIL Staff) |
| State law | Repealed. Alabama has had no college NIL statute since Act 2022-2 repealed Act 2021-227 on 2022-02-03; the state's athlete agent act still reaches agents who handle endorsement deals | /nil/college/alabama |
What is specific to Alabama
Alabama runs its NIL support under one athletics department name, The Advantage. Its page describes an Advantage Center on the south side of Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium, developed with Learfield, next to The Authentic, the Fanatics store that sells athletes' NIL merchandise. It also describes the Advantage NIL Accelerator, launched in 2023 with campus partners: the UA School of Law's Entrepreneurship and Nonprofit Clinic (pro bono transactional work such as contract review and trademark registration counseling), the Culverhouse entrepreneurship program and the Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute, and the Master of Tax Accounting program, whose faculty and graduate students hold free weekly tax office hours. On 2026-09-08 Nike and Alabama Athletics announced 18 Crimson Tide athletes on Nike's Blue Ribbon Elite NIL roster for 2026-27, from men's and women's basketball, football, softball, baseball, volleyball, men's swimming, gymnastics and soccer.
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
Questions about NIL at Alabama
Does Alabama pay its athletes?
The College Sports Commission lists every SEC member, Alabama included, as participating in House settlement revenue sharing for 2026-27, with a cap of approximately $21.58 million per school. Director of Athletics Greg Byrne's statement posted on X on 2025-06-07 says Alabama Athletics "will now add to that by offering new scholarships while fully funding revenue sharing". It gives no dollar figure, and no revenue-sharing figure was found on rolltide.com. No Alabama statute has addressed school pay since 2022.
What NIL collective works with Alabama?
Alabama Athletics calls Yea Alabama "the official name, image and likeness entity of The University of Alabama" (release of 2023-02-02) and still names it on its NIL page as of 2026-10-21. UA's own word for it is "entity", not collective. The department's Built By Bama Home Team, which connects businesses, donors and supporters, unites Crimson Tide Sports Marketing, the Crimson Tide Foundation and Yea Alabama.
How do Alabama athletes report NIL deals?
Two layers apply. NCAA Division I Bylaws 22.2.2 and 22.2.2.2 require third-party deals of $600 or more to be reported through NIL Go within five business days. UA's NIL FAQs, answering whether a booster or fan may contract with a UA athlete, say: "Before entering such a contract, the SA is required to disclose any proposed contract for use of their NIL to UA." UA's page does not name a portal or a deadline in days for that step.
Does Alabama have an NIL law in 2026?
No. Alabama's college NIL law, Act 2021-227, was repealed in full by Act 2022-2, effective 2022-02-03, and no NIL bill has passed since. What governs an Alabama athlete instead is UA's own NIL rules, NCAA reporting through NIL Go, the College Sports Commission's rules and the House settlement. The state's Revised Uniform Athlete Agents Act still applies to agents who solicit endorsement contracts.
Who helps Alabama athletes with NIL contracts and taxes?
UA's NIL page lists the Advantage NIL Accelerator partners: the UA School of Law's Entrepreneurship and Nonprofit Clinic, which provides pro bono transactional services including contract review and trademark registration counseling; the Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute and Culverhouse entrepreneurship program; and the Culverhouse School of Accountancy, whose Master of Tax Accounting faculty and graduate students hold free weekly office hours on federal and state income tax filing. NIL staff can be reached at advantage@ia.ua.edu.
