The rules at UNT
| Question | What is published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| School NIL policy | "Name, Image and Likeness Policies" (web page dated 2021-06-30, still linked from the site's Name, Image and Likeness feature page), written "In accordance with Texas state law" as it stood in 2021. It defines official team activities, sets disclosure and review steps, lists restricted categories, bars UNT property in NIL, and requires financial literacy training for first- and third-year athletes. It still says UNT "may not provide or solicit a prospective student-athlete with compensation" for NIL. The ParamoUNT NIL education sheet (2023) summarizes the rules for athletes | UNT Athletics, Name, Image and Likeness Policies and ParamoUNT NIL quick hitter (2023) |
| How deals are disclosed | Policy: "Prior to entering into an agreement for the use of their name, image or likeness, North Texas student-athletes must disclose the proposed contract or opportunity through the INFLCR platform"; compliance reviews within five business days; "Opportunities that exceed $5,000 shall require additional review by the Vice President/Director of Athletics"; conflicts are resolved within 10 days. The ParamoUNT sheet says disclosure comes before signing and before payment. Texas law: disclosure of each proposed contract before signing (§ 51.9246(g)(1)). NCAA: third-party deals of $600 or more go to NIL Go within five business days (Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2) | UNT Athletics, Name, Image and Likeness Policies and ParamoUNT sheet; /nil/college/texas; NCAA Division I Manual 2026-27 |
| Banned categories | Texas law bars pay for athletic performance and for endorsing alcohol, tobacco products, e-cigarettes or other nicotine delivery devices, anabolic steroids, sports betting, casino gambling, a firearm the athlete cannot legally buy, or a sexually oriented business (§ 51.9246(g)(2)(B)). UNT's policy lists alcohol, tobacco products, e-cigarettes, anabolic steroids, gambling, firearms an athlete cannot legally purchase, sexually oriented businesses and anything on the NCAA banned substances list, and bars deals that conflict with a UNT contract, team or department rules, the student code of conduct or university rules | UNT Athletics, Name, Image and Likeness Policies; /nil/college/texas |
| School marks and group licensing | The policy says UNT property, "including intellectual property, jerseys or equipment, logos and symbols, may not be used" in NIL; the ParamoUNT sheet says athletes "CANNOT use official Mean Green marks and logos except through group licensing" and describes a group licensing program combining an athlete's NIL with UNT trademarks. UNT's 2024-08-07 Influxer release lists "group licensing with the brandr group" among its NIL options, and its 2024-09-04 release says merchandise in the UNT NIL Store by Campus Ink "is officially licensed by the University of North Texas" | UNT Athletics, Name, Image and Likeness Policies, ParamoUNT sheet and releases (2024-08-07, 2024-09-04) |
| Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission puts the 2026-27 cap at approximately $21.58 million per school and lists the University of North Texas as participating in 2026-27. UNT's 2025-01-09 release says its Teamworks General Manager platform is used to "manage and analyze budgets, plan rosters, and oversee NIL opportunities". UNT has not published a 2026-27 total or its division by sport. Its staff directory lists a Director, NIL Strategy & Revenue Share Operations | College Sports Commission; UNT Athletics, Teamworks General Manager release (2025-01-09) and Staff Directory |
| Collective or NIL group | Not published. No collective is named on the UNT pages reviewed. The ParamoUNT sheet describes the Mean Green Exchange as a portal "to connect businesses, collectives, donors, alumni and fans with student-athletes". UNT created a Senior Associate AD for NIL and General Manager post in 2024 (release of 2024-08-07), and its staff directory on 2026-10-23 lists a Senior Associate AD, NIL / Director of Football Strategy (hired 2026-01-30) and a Director, NIL Strategy & Revenue Share Operations | UNT Athletics, ParamoUNT sheet, releases (2024-08-07, 2026-01-30) and Staff Directory |
| Agents and representation | The policy says UNT athletes "may obtain professional representation to secure name, image and likeness opportunities"; the ParamoUNT sheet adds that an agent or attorney may be used "for NIL use only". UNT's Student-Athlete Agent Procedure (2024) "requires agents who wish to contact its student-athletes or their families to have an updated registration on file with the Texas Office of the Secretary of State", and athletes or parents who contact an agent first notify the Compliance Office. Texas law bars a school from preventing professional representation for NIL, including by a Texas-licensed attorney (§ 51.9246(c)(2)) | UNT Athletics, Name, Image and Likeness Policies, ParamoUNT sheet and Student-Athlete Agent Procedure (2024); /nil/college/texas |
| Compliance contact | UNT Office of Athletics Compliance, located in the Mean Green Village Student-Athlete Academic Center; Lauren Spencer, Senior Associate AD, Governance & Regulatory Affairs (named 2026-07-08 as chief compliance officer), Lauren.Spencer@unt.edu | UNT Athletics, Compliance page and release (2026-07-08) |
| State law | In force. Texas Education Code § 51.9246 requires each proposed NIL contract to be disclosed to the school before signing, bans listed endorsement categories, gives athletes 10 days to resolve a conflict the school identifies, keeps NIL contract terms held by public universities like UNT confidential, and since HB 126 (2025-06-05) no longer bars pay from the school | /nil/college/texas |
What is specific to UNT
UNT treats NIL as a staffed business line. Its ParamoUNT program teaches current legislation and personal branding, the Mean Green Exchange lets businesses find and pay athletes inside INFLCR, and group licensing is the one route the ParamoUNT sheet gives for putting Mean Green marks on an athlete's deal, backed by an officially licensed UNT NIL Store that opened in September 2024. Between August 2024 and January 2026 UNT created a senior associate athletic director post for NIL, adopted Teamworks General Manager for budgets, rosters and NIL, and hired a former associate head coach as Senior Associate AD for NIL and Director of Football Strategy; its directory now also lists a director for NIL strategy and revenue share operations. The written rules lag behind: the policy page athletes are pointed to still reflects Texas law as of 2021, including a line that UNT may not pay prospective athletes for NIL and a $5,000 threshold for review by the athletics director.
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
