The rules at Pitt
| Question | What is published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| School NIL policy | Pitt's current NIL page carries a Student-Athlete FAQ (disclosure, NIL Go, barred categories) and contacts. Two policy documents are also posted on Pitt's athletics site: "Name, Image and Likeness Policy & Resource Documents" (13 pages, "Policy Effective Date: January 2, 2023"), and a one-page notice posted 2024-09-11 (file named "NIL.Policy.Under.Review.9.2024"; the notice itself carries no date) saying that policy "is currently under review" and listing interim contacts. No replacement policy was found. The 2023 document bars pay "as an inducement to enroll, remain enrolled, or to play at Pitt" and pay for athletic performance, and says aid "will not be reduced because of earning compensation for NIL Activities in compliance with this Policy" | Pitt Athletics, NIL page; NIL Policy (2023); NIL Policy Under Review notice (2024) |
| How deals are disclosed | NIL Go for noninstitutional deals of $600 or more within five business days (NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2). Pitt's NIL page adds that "A Pitt student-athlete must disclose all compensated NIL Activities prior to the activity occurring. Disclosure through INFLCR is preferred but you may also disclose NIL deals through the compliance office", and that "Failure to disclose an NIL Activity in advance could lead to eligibility consequences." The 2023 policy required disclosure through INFLCR before a contract is signed. Pennsylvania law has made disclosure to the school optional ("may") since 2024 | Pitt Athletics, NIL page and NIL Policy (2023); NCAA 2026-27 Division I Manual; /nil/college/pennsylvania |
| Banned categories | Pitt's NIL page bars NIL pay tied to a list that reads "Adult Entertainment", "Alcohol", "Casinos and Gambling, including sports betting, the lottery, video games, online games and mobile devices", "Tobacco and Vaping", "Prescription Pharmaceuticals", "A Controlled Dangerous Substance" and "Anything that is illegal, conflicts with University policy, or conflicts with NCAA rules", and bars NIL activities that require wearing or displaying a competing brand during team activities. Pennsylvania's § 2006-M(d) bars the same six categories in its own wording; the 2023 policy also listed "NCAA banned substances" | Pitt Athletics, NIL page and NIL Policy (2023); /nil/college/pennsylvania |
| School marks and group licensing | The 2023 policy says athletes may not use Pitt marks or Pitt gear, or photos or videos showing them, in NIL activities "without Pitt's prior written approval", except as its Logo & Mark FAQ allows; they may say in a bio that they are Pitt athletes but may not imply Pitt endorses a product. Pitt's NIL page links The Brandr Group, which launched a voluntary group licensing program for all Pitt athletes on 2022-02-14. A 2024-02-28 release lists four NIL apparel store options (ShopPittPanthers, Rally House, Athletes Thread and Campus Ink) and says Campus Ink's merchandise "is officially licensed by the University of Pittsburgh" | Pitt Athletics, NIL Policy (2023), NIL page, Brandr release (2022-02-14), NIL apparel release (2024-02-28) |
| Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission puts the 2026-27 cap at approximately $21.58 million per school and lists the University of Pittsburgh among participating schools for 2026-27. Greene's letter of 2025-06-07 says Division I schools "like the University of Pittsburgh are now permitted to pay student-athletes a fee for their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) through revenue sharing"; his letter of 2026-03-13 says "We already provide our student-athletes with the full amount allowable through revenue sharing." Pitt has not published a dollar figure or how it divides the money | Pitt Athletics, Message from Allen Greene on House vs. NCAA (2025-06-07) and From the Desk of Allen Greene (2026-03-13); College Sports Commission |
| Collective or NIL group | None now. Alliance 412, which Pitt releases of 2024 called "the official NIL collective of Pitt Athletics" and "an independent, Limited Liability Company formed by University of Pittsburgh supporters", was wound down: Pitt's release of 2025-09-09 says "Alliance 412 operations will conclude effective September 30" and "The athletics department will assume the responsibilities of Alliance 412". On 2026-06-16 Pitt Athletics and JMI Sports (Pitt Sports Marketing) launched H2PNIL, a platform for brands seeking NIL partnerships with Pitt athletes, with contact Pat Bostick (pbostick@athletics.pitt.edu). Greene's letter of 2026-09-03 says success "requires more businesses and companies to partner with H2PNIL to support our student-athletes" | Pitt Athletics, Alliance 412 releases (2024-07-10, 2024-10-11, 2025-09-09), H2PNIL release (2026-06-16) and From the Desk of C. Allen Greene (2026-09-03) |
| Agents and representation | Pitt's compliance page says "It is now permissible to hire an agent, talent representative, marketing representative for Name, Image, and Likeness purposes ONLY", that hiring an agent for professional sports opportunities "remains impermissible" and an athlete who does so "will forfeit all remaining eligibility", that athletes "must receive permission from the Office of Athletics Compliance prior to any contact with agents, advisors, or anyone associated with them", and that "Agents interested in any Pitt student-athletes must be registered with the state of Pennsylvania"; it links an Agent/Advisor Registration Application. The 2023 policy allows an agent or lawyer for NIL, repeats the Pennsylvania rule then in force that representation come from a registered athlete agent or a Pennsylvania lawyer, and says an athlete who obtains any professional representation "must register the involvement in accordance with the Pitt Agent and Advisor Program". State law: agents register with the State Athletic Commission; an NIL agent contract must say it covers nothing beyond NIL representation; the athlete may cancel an agency contract within 14 days | Pitt Athletics, NIL Policy (2023) and Compliance page; /nil/college/pennsylvania |
| Compliance contact | Pitt Athletics Compliance, Financial and Student Services Office: Compliance@athletics.pitt.edu and 412-327-1155. Pitt's NIL page lists NIL contacts for cap management and NIL Go (Dustin Gray, Blaire Ford), NIL business development (Pat Bostick) and athlete education and third-party NIL operations (Kristen Marsters) | Pitt Athletics, Compliance page and NIL page |
| State law | In force. Pennsylvania's Article XX-M (Act 89 of 2024) covers State-related universities, Pitt among them, bars six categories, makes disclosure to the school optional, and requires a registered athlete agent or a Pennsylvania lawyer for NIL representation | /nil/college/pennsylvania |
What is specific to Pitt
Pitt moved its NIL support inside the athletics department. When Alliance 412 wound down in September 2025, Greene said that "Now that there are clearer guidelines from the College Sports Commission, bringing NIL strategy under our roof positions us to attack this new era head-on", and Pitt appointed Pat Bostick Senior Associate AD for NIL Business Development and Strategic Partnerships. The next step was H2PNIL with JMI Sports, Pitt's multimedia rights partner since 2019, which the release says is built for "driving above-the-cap NIL revenue" and handles revenue generation, content, "contract fulfillment" and compliance support for deals with Pitt athletes. Greene's letters tie this to revenue sharing: Pitt already pays "the full amount allowable", and "the programs that thrive are the ones that bring their entire community together, from alumni and fans to supporters and corporate partners, to create above-the-cap NIL opportunities for our student-athletes". Pitt also sets a stricter disclosure rule than state law: Pennsylvania made disclosure to the school optional in 2024, while Pitt's NIL page still says paid NIL activity "must" be disclosed before it happens.
Pennsylvania law at a State-related university
Pennsylvania's college NIL law, Article XX-M of the Public School Code (see /nil/college/pennsylvania), covers State-related universities, Pitt among them. Pitt's NIL page tracks it closely on banned categories: the six product categories on Pitt's list match § 2006-M(d). On disclosure Pitt asks for more than the statute: since Act 89 of 2024 the law says an athlete "may" disclose a contract to the school, while Pitt's page says paid NIL activity must be disclosed before it happens. On representation, both point to an athlete agent registered with the State Athletic Commission or a lawyer admitted in Pennsylvania.
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
Questions about NIL at Pitt
Does Pitt pay its athletes?
Yes, through House settlement revenue sharing. Athletic Director Allen Greene wrote on 2026-03-13: "We already provide our student-athletes with the full amount allowable through revenue sharing." The College Sports Commission lists the University of Pittsburgh as participating in 2026-27, with a cap of approximately $21.58 million per school. Pitt has not published how the money is divided among sports.
What NIL collective works with Pitt?
None now. Alliance 412, once "the official NIL collective of Pitt Athletics", was wound down: Pitt's release of 2025-09-09 says its operations "will conclude effective September 30" and that the athletics department "will assume the responsibilities of Alliance 412". Since 2026-06-16 Pitt Athletics and JMI Sports have run H2PNIL, a platform for brands seeking NIL partnerships with Pitt athletes; Pitt's contact for it is Pat Bostick.
How do Pitt athletes report NIL deals?
Pitt's NIL page says athletes disclose "all compensated NIL Activities prior to the activity occurring", preferably through INFLCR or else through the compliance office, and that late disclosure "could lead to eligibility consequences". Separately, NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2 and 22.2.2.2 require third-party deals of $600 or more to be reported in NIL Go within five business days.
What NIL deals can't Pitt athletes do?
Pitt bars NIL pay connected with adult entertainment, alcohol, casinos and gambling (including sports betting and the lottery), tobacco and vaping, prescription pharmaceuticals, controlled dangerous substances, and anything illegal or in conflict with University policy or NCAA rules. The first six are also barred by Pennsylvania law. Athletes also may not wear or show a competing brand during team activities.
Does Pennsylvania's NIL law apply to Pitt athletes?
Yes. Pennsylvania's Article XX-M covers athletes at State-related universities, Pitt among them. It bars six product categories, says an athlete "may" disclose a contract to the school before signing, and requires NIL representation by an agent registered with the State Athletic Commission or a Pennsylvania lawyer. Pitt's own page asks for more: disclosure of all paid NIL activity before it occurs.
