Saint Joseph's NIL rules.

Saint Joseph's opted in to revenue sharing for basketball only, licensing players' NIL as brand ambassadors. NIL Go applies and Pennsylvania bans six deal categories.

The short answer. Saint Joseph's opted in to the House settlement on 2025-06-10 for men's and women's basketball only, and its FAQ says it pays those athletes by "licensing the Name, Image and Likeness (NIL)" of basketball players as "brand ambassadors for Saint Joseph's University"; the College Sports Commission lists the school for 2026-27. The same FAQ says the school "will sunset the Hawk Hill Alliance", the alumni-run NIL entity launched in 2023. Third-party deals of $600 or more go to NIL Go within five business days, and the athletics NIL policy (revised 2023-04-01) also says athletes "shall use best efforts" to disclose a contract to SJU Athletics seven days before signing.

School NIL policySaint Joseph's University Athletics, "Name, Image and Likeness Policy", effective July 1, 2021 (revised April 1, 2023), hosted on sjuhawks.com and named in the 2025-26 Student-Athlete Handbook. It says athletes "may receive compensation from third parties (but NOT from the University)" if the pay is "commensurate with fair market value", is not "Pay for Play" and is not an inducement to attend, and it cites Pennsylvania's 2021 Act 26 Article XX-K "(as revised November 2022)". It predates the 2025 basketball opt-in. The NIL page on sjuhawks.com links NIL Go, a Pennsylvania law file (House Bill 2633 of 2022) and six educational briefs, but not the policy itself; no NIL policy appears in the university's Policy Library listing, which says it does not include all university policies (read 2026-10-23)Saint Joseph's Athletics, NIL Policy (rev. 2023-04-01), NIL page and Student-Athlete Handbook 2025-26; Saint Joseph's University Policy Library
How deals are disclosedNIL Go for third-party deals of $600 or more within five business days (NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2); the 2025-26 handbook says athletes "must report new NIL deals within 5 business days of execution of the NIL contract or otherwise agreement to the contract or payment terms". The SJU policy says an athlete "shall use best efforts to disclose the contents of the contract to SJU Athletics at least seven (7) days prior to execution of the contract", and SJU Athletics keeps NIL records for ten years. The NIL page says athletes "electing to disclose their NIL Activity should initiate the NIL Disclosure Form in Teamworks/ARMS" or contact Compliance. Banned categoriesPennsylvania law and the SJU policy bar NIL activity tied to adult entertainment; alcohol; casinos and gambling, including sports betting, the lottery and betting on video, online and mobile games; tobacco and electronic smoking products and devices; prescription pharmaceuticals; and controlled dangerous substances. The policy adds that NIL activity "should be consistent with the Jesuit, Catholic values of Saint Joseph's University", that athletes may not miss class or required team activities for NIL, and that athletes wear Nike footwear and apparel while training or competing, the one sponsor category closed to NIL dealsSaint Joseph's Athletics, NIL Policy (rev. 2023-04-01); /nil/college/pennsylvania
School marks and group licensingThe policy lets athletes say they play a sport "at Saint Joseph's University"; any other use of the name, logos or marks in NIL activity goes to the University's Licensing Advisory Committee. It repeats the state rule that a maker of a college team jersey, video game or trading cards for profit pays a royalty to each athlete whose NIL is used and to the University for its intellectual property. The athletics licensing page says anyone producing items "bearing Saint Joseph's name or logo, must be a licensed vendor", through CLC. Revenue sharingThe College Sports Commission lists Saint Joseph's for 2026-27 and puts the cap at "approximately $21.58 million per school". The school announced on 2025-06-10 that it "will opt-in" to the House settlement, and its FAQ says it is "licensing the Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) of our men's and women's basketball student-athletes", with payments "in exchange for them serving as brand ambassadors", that it "will spend a small percentage of the maximum amount for men's and women's basketball student-athletes only", and that it funds them "through donor support, special events, and creative new revenue streams", including the Basketball Excellence Fund. Collective or NIL groupHawk Hill Alliance, launched by alumni with Student Athlete NIL (SANIL) and described by the university on 2023-04-17 as "an official Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) entity" that "is independent from Saint Joseph's University". The Basketball Excellence Fund FAQ (2025) answers whether it will still exist: "In short, no. We will sunset the Hawk Hill Alliance". Its web domain did not resolve on 2026-10-23, and its status was not confirmed from a primary source. Agents and representationThe agents page says "Agents or advisors wishing to contact any SJU student-athlete must register with the Saint Joseph's University Athletics Compliance Office" and "the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission". The policy lets athletes use professional service providers for NIL and says representation on contracts or legal matters comes from an athlete agent "in accordance with 5 Pa.C.S. Sections 3301 - 3320" or a Pennsylvania lawyer; the University may help evaluate providers but may not pay for representation, and staff may not be paid by an athlete for NIL services. State lawIn force. Pennsylvania's Article XX-M (Act 89 of 2024) reaches degree-granting private colleges chartered in the state, which on its face describes Saint Joseph's (its charter record was not checked); it protects NIL pay, leaves disclosure to the school optional, bans six product categories and requires a registered athlete agent or Pennsylvania lawyer for NIL representation/nil/college/pennsylvania

What is specific to Saint Joseph's

Saint Joseph's took the House settlement for two teams only. Its 2025-06-10 release says the school "will opt-in" so that its men's and women's basketball programs "can continue competing at the highest levels of the Atlantic 10 and Big 5", and that the decision came after the final settlement "provided relief to current student-athletes on the issue of roster limits" through designated student-athletes. Rather than calling the payments revenue sharing, which its FAQ says "can be misleading" because most departments have no revenue to share, St. Joe's describes them as a license of basketball players' NIL in return for serving as university brand ambassadors, paid for by donors through the Basketball Excellence Fund. In December 2025 the department named a four-person team, including the general managers of both basketball programs, "to generate funding for NIL and assist St. Joe's basketball coaches with roster construction". The written athletics NIL policy, last revised in April 2023, still describes NIL pay as coming from third parties and not from the University.

How Leave fits

In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.

Questions about NIL at Saint Joseph's

Does Saint Joseph's pay its athletes?

For basketball. The school announced on 2025-06-10 that it would opt in to the House settlement, and its FAQ says it licenses the NIL of its men's and women's basketball players, paying them to serve as brand ambassadors for the university, and will spend "a small percentage of the maximum amount" on basketball only. The College Sports Commission lists Saint Joseph's for 2026-27, with a cap of about $21.58 million per school. No amounts are published.

Is Hawk Hill Alliance still the St. Joe's NIL collective?

The school's Basketball Excellence Fund FAQ (2025) says "We will sunset the Hawk Hill Alliance" and points donors to the fund instead. Hawk Hill Alliance launched in April 2023 as an alumni-run NIL entity independent of the university. Its web domain did not resolve on 2026-10-23, and its current status was not confirmed from a primary source.

How do Saint Joseph's athletes report NIL deals?

Third-party deals of $600 or more go to NIL Go within five business days (NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2 and 22.2.2.2). The athletics NIL policy also says athletes "shall use best efforts" to disclose a contract to SJU Athletics at least seven days before signing, through the NIL Disclosure Form in Teamworks or by contacting Compliance. Pennsylvania law itself makes disclosure to the school optional.

Does Pennsylvania's NIL law apply to a private school like Saint Joseph's?

Article XX-M covers athletes at Pennsylvania institutions of higher education, a list that includes degree-granting private colleges chartered in Pennsylvania, which on its face describes Saint Joseph's (its charter record was not checked). The St. Joe's policy applies the state's six banned categories and cites Pennsylvania's agent rules.

Can St. Joe's athletes use the school's name or logo in NIL deals?

The policy lets an athlete say they play a sport "at Saint Joseph's University". Any other use of the name, logos or marks goes through the university's Licensing Advisory Committee, and the athletics licensing page says anyone producing items bearing the school's name or logo must be a licensed vendor.

Do agents have to register to work with Saint Joseph's athletes?

The athletics agents page says agents or advisors who want to contact an SJU athlete register with the Athletics Compliance Office and with the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission. Pennsylvania law limits NIL representation to registered athlete agents and Pennsylvania lawyers.
