The rules at Notre Dame
| Question | What is published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| School NIL policy | "Notre Dame NIL Guidelines for Students", updated 2022-05-10, linked from the athletics NIL page as "the University's NIL Policy". They apply to Notre Dame students generally, set when Notre Dame's name, logos, trademarks and landmarks may appear in NIL activity, bar NIL activity during or instead of academic obligations such as class and exams and during official team activities unless the overseeing University official approves, limit what faculty and staff may do in a personal capacity, and say a student believed to be in violation may be referred to the University Conduct Process. Notre Dame's Current Student-Athletes page says "The most up-to-date version of the policies are available in ARMS"; those student-athlete policies are not posted on the athletics compliance pages | Notre Dame, NIL Guidelines for Students (2022-05-10); Notre Dame Athletics, NIL and Current Student-Athletes pages |
| How deals are disclosed | NIL Go for third-party deals of $600 or more within five business days (NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2). Notre Dame's NIL page says deals transacted through its 4 for Forever Marketplace "automatically generate 1099s for student-athletes and employers and automatically disclose deal terms to the Athletics Compliance office". Indiana has no NIL statute, so no state disclosure rule applies; when an athlete signs an agency contract, Indiana's agent law has the agent and the athlete notify the athletic director within 72 hours or before the next scheduled athletic event, whichever is first (IC 25-5.2-2-9) | NCAA Division I Manual 2026-27; Notre Dame Athletics, NIL page; IC 25-5.2-2-9 |
| Banned categories | Indiana law lists none. Notre Dame's guidelines say its name, logos, trademarks and landmarks may never be used in NIL activities that "Are inconsistent with the University's Catholic mission and values" or that involve any illegal drug, tobacco product, gambling, alcohol (for students under 21) or "adult content". The guidelines limit use of Notre Dame identifiers; they do not list categories banned outright | Notre Dame, NIL Guidelines for Students (2022-05-10); /nil/college/indiana |
| School marks and group licensing | Under the guidelines, Notre Dame identifiers may appear on personal clothing, uniforms and campus images in an athlete's own promotion, but endorsing another brand while in a Notre Dame uniform or with Notre Dame identifiers beyond personal apparel needs the University's prior approval, and merchandise with Notre Dame identifiers needs approval through licensing@nd.edu. The athletics NIL page says "Only officially licensed partners through the University Enterprises and Events" may use official university logos and trademarks, and lists "Collectibles" (football name and number jerseys, and football, volleyball and women's soccer custom name and number apparel) that directly support athletes | Notre Dame, NIL Guidelines for Students; Notre Dame Athletics, NIL page |
| Revenue sharing | The College Sports Commission puts the 2026-27 cap at approximately $21.58 million per school and lists Notre Dame as a participating school for 2026-27. Notre Dame has published no revenue share figure. The athletics NIL page's FAQ, read 2026-10-21, still lists "The institution to compensate the student-athlete" under "NCAA Rules do NOT allow", while the College Sports Commission says participating institutions "can share revenue directly with student-athletes" | College Sports Commission, Participating Schools and Revenue Sharing; Notre Dame Athletics, NIL page |
| Collective or NIL group | Notre Dame's NIL page (checked 2026-10-21) features Rally, which the page describes as "a lifestyle agency for the next iteration of collegiate athletics, dedicated to creating meaningful Name, Image, and Likeness opportunities for Notre Dame student-athletes", and the 4 for Forever Marketplace, where creating an account and posting opportunities is free. The page names no collective. Notre Dame's reorganization announced 2026-04-30 left the department's name, image and likeness division under Ron Powlus, named the department's first chief operating officer | Notre Dame Athletics, NIL page; reorganization announcement (2026-04-30) |
| Agents and representation | Notre Dame requests that every athlete agent or advisor interested in representing its athletes complete an Agent Registration Form and provide a copy of their State of Indiana agent license, players' association applications, a resume, references and a list of current and former clients; correspondence to athletes goes through the Athletics Compliance Office, and agents are asked to refrain from telephone contact with athletes or their families until eligibility is exhausted. Indiana law requires athlete agents, including agents for endorsement contracts, to register with the attorney general (IC 25-5.2-2-2) and gives the athlete 14 days to cancel an agency contract (IC 25-5.2-2-10). The guidelines bar Notre Dame faculty and staff, in a personal capacity, from acting as a student's agent for NIL activities | Notre Dame Athletics, Agents page; IC 25-5.2; NIL Guidelines for Students |
| Compliance contact | Notre Dame Athletics Compliance Office, 113 Joyce Center, Notre Dame, IN 46556 (Agents page); staff contacts are listed on the compliance page | Notre Dame Athletics, Compliance and Agents pages |
| State law | Indiana has no college NIL statute; its athlete agent law (IC 25-5.2) covers agents for endorsement contracts, with registration through the attorney general | /nil/college/indiana |
What is specific to Notre Dame
Notre Dame plays football outside the ACC: the ACC's history page says Notre Dame entered "for competition in all sports but football" and plays five football games a year with ACC schools, Notre Dame's 2012 announcement said it joined "in all sports but football and hockey", and the Big Ten says Notre Dame joined it for men's ice hockey beginning in 2017-18. Its NIL rules are just as particular. Notre Dame wrote one set of NIL guidelines for its whole student body, so a football player and a student who sells art online read the same document, and the limits are framed around Notre Dame's identity: its marks may never appear in NIL activity "inconsistent with the University's Catholic mission and values". With no Indiana NIL statute, those guidelines and NCAA and College Sports Commission rules set most of the terms.
How Leave fits
In Leave, every deal thread carries a rules summary for the athlete's state and level, and keeps the contract, its dates and the disclosure deadline that applies. It is a summary, not a ruling; the school and the law decide. Leave is software, not an agent, and takes 0% of any deal. You decide, you send.
Questions about NIL at Notre Dame
Is Notre Dame in a conference for NIL purposes?
The ACC's history page says Notre Dame joined on 2013-07-01 for competition in all sports but football and plays five football games a year with ACC schools, and Notre Dame's men's ice hockey team plays in the Big Ten. The College Sports Commission lists Notre Dame with the ACC. NCAA Division I NIL rules, including NIL Go reporting, apply to Notre Dame athletes in every sport.
Does Notre Dame pay its athletes?
The College Sports Commission lists Notre Dame as a participating school for 2026-27, the group of schools that can share revenue with athletes up to a cap of approximately $21.58 million per school that year. Notre Dame has published no revenue share figure, and its athletics NIL FAQ still lists "The institution to compensate the student-athlete" under "NCAA Rules do NOT allow".
Does Indiana have an NIL law for Notre Dame athletes?
No. Indiana has passed no college NIL statute. What Indiana law covers is representation: athlete agents, including agents for endorsement contracts, register with the Indiana attorney general under IC 25-5.2, and an athlete may cancel an agency contract within 14 days. Notre Dame's own NIL Guidelines for Students and NCAA rules fill the rest.
How do Notre Dame athletes report NIL deals?
Third-party deals worth $600 or more go to NIL Go within five business days of signing (NCAA Bylaws 22.2.2, 22.2.2.2). Deals transacted through Notre Dame's 4 for Forever Marketplace generate 1099s and automatically disclose deal terms to the Athletics Compliance Office, according to Notre Dame's NIL page.
Can Notre Dame athletes use the ND logo in NIL deals?
Only within Notre Dame's guidelines. Notre Dame identifiers may appear on personal clothing, uniforms and campus images when an athlete promotes themselves, but endorsing another brand in uniform or with Notre Dame identifiers beyond personal apparel needs prior approval, and merchandise with Notre Dame identifiers needs approval through licensing@nd.edu. Notre Dame identifiers may never appear in NIL activity inconsistent with its Catholic mission and values or involving illegal drugs, tobacco, gambling, alcohol for students under 21 or adult content.
